Police received several complaints concerning a young man
going from door to door in the Lakewood subdivision Sunday,
c 1° be conducting a poll for The Baytown Sun
The Sun is not and never has conducted such polls, according
to Gary Dobbs, editor and publisher of The Sun. Anyone con-
tacted by someone making such a claim should contact police.
Police took a 16-year-old
juvenile into custody Wednes-
day on suspicion of robbery.
The incident began as a
burglary but turned into a rob-
bery when the property owner
chased down the suspects,
police said.
According to police, a resi-
dent at 305 W. Baker received a
phone call from a neighbor
asking if he was missing any
speakers from his car. He went
outside to look and found the
speakers gone. The neighbor
met him outside and pointed at
two teen-agers running away
with the speakers. The man
gave chase, running across a
field in pursuit of the suspects,
who dropped the speakers as
they ran. He gave up, collected
his speakers and went back to
the apartments. Then he got in
his car and intercepted die pair a
few blocks south on North Main
Street.
He told police the suspects
admitted that they’d stolen the
speakers, so he grabbed one of
the suspects and tried to hold
him until police could arrive.
The other suspect kicked him in
the mouth and both suspects ran.
A few minutes later, Sgt.
Martha Treloar located one of
the teen-age suspects. He was
taken into custody.
COUNTRY CLUB OAKS
Police said a Wednesday
night burglary was the most
recent in a series of burglaries in
the Country Club Oaks subdivi-
sion.
Someone broke into the home
in the 4600 block of Alamance
between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m.
Approximately $1,200 in prop-
erty was stolen, including a
television and jewelry.
At least five daytime burgla-
ries have occurred in that area in
the past few weeks, police said.
BURGLARIES/THEFTS
—Someone broke into a vehi-
cle pariced in the 400 block of
South Burnet about 3 a.m.
Thursday but a car alarm woke
the vehicle’s owner and appa-
rently frightened away the sus-
pect(s). A window was broken
on the car and police found
signs that someone had tried,
but failed to remove the car
stereo. Damage is estimated at
$230.
—A Baytown man told police
someone had charged more than
$2,500 in items on his credit
cards. The man said he’d lost
his billfold and those cards
during a visit to a local bank.
—Two tires and wheels were
reported stolen from a vehicle
parked in the 300 block of South
Main Tuesday night. Loss is
$180.
TRAFFIC
A 19-year-old Baytown man
was injured when he fell asleep
at the wheel of his 1982 Cadil-
lac and plowed into two John
Deere tractors about 9 a.m.
Wednesday. Police said J. Pre-
ston Mood was taken to Bay-
Coast Hospital for treatment of
his injuries, which though seri-
ous, were not considered life
threatening. Police said the
tractors were legally parked on
the shoulder of the 8100 block
of South Highway 146.
COURT UPDATE
A former Robert E. Lee High
School student has received two
years’ probation for knifing a
fellow student at school, court
officials said.
Guillermo Willie Torres, 17,
was charged in Judge Mary
Bacon’s 338th District Court
with assault after he allegedly
put a knife to the throat of
another student. The victim suf-
fered a small cut on his neck
and a deeper cut on one finger,
requiring seven stitches,
according to police.
Goose Creek school officials
expelled Torres after the inci-
dent. His probation requires him
to attend a school or start work-
ing, but school officials have
refused to allow him to return to
any Goose Creek district school.
His options include attending
school in another district, going
to private school or working,
Ms. Bacon said.
