Rylander says sales tax rebates up
Reflecting strong holiday busi-
ness trends, sales tax rebates to
Texas cities and counties jumped
9.5 percent over the same period
in 1998, according to Carole Kee-
ton Rylander, Texas state comp-
troller.
The state delivered $318.2 mil-
lion in sales tax payments to
1,097 Texas cities and 118 coun-
ties this month as opposed to
$290.5 million last year.
“February sales tax rebates
reflect holiday season sales by
Texas retailers,” Rylander said. “It
appears that retailers had a very
good Christmas, an indication of
Texas’ strong economy and high
consumer confidence.”
Sales taxes collected in Decem-
ber and reported in January, are
being distributed this month.
Baytown gained $995,935 for
this payment period, and a 3.93
percent increase over 1998 when
the city received $919,778. Pay-
