SUPPORT
Helping Our Children
Ah imrrnU we are deeply coil-
cerm-d when our children expe-
rienee the death of someone I
they love. We want to protect I
them from sadness, yet, we real- I
ize that we also need to explain I
death and how to say good Lye. I
How are we as parents to han- I
die this difficult but necessary I
task? We must let them know I
we wall try to answer all of their
questions honestly. Our children
need to know that death and
grieving ran tie problematic tor
adults, too. We can encourage
appropriate grieving by being
good role models in our own
mourning It is healthy for our
children to see our tears. They
realize that by crying openly we
share our sadness and feel a
release of intense emotions.
Talking about our feelings is
also a healthy release, It is
essential to understand that it is
nonmil to experience over-
whelming emotions when we
grieve. Children can compre-
hend diificult situations when
approached with honesty, com-
passion. and love.
