only tity. All along the road that
loads to hall anil death there are
pains and panalttes, sorrows and
disappointments. Thera ora warn- !
ings not to go on. The loan of God
makes it hard tor even the head-
less to destroy them selves Satan's
way is definitely made attractive,
but It is all a deception.
The Word of God assures us
that all along the steep road which
leads to eternal life there are well-
springs of joy to refresh the
weary. Solomon, in his Proverbs,
tells us that those who walk in
wisdom’<! Why will be exceedingly
joyful. Opportunities to help oth-
ers brightens the road, and serves
to make it easier. At every step
the Christian can feel the touch
of the Master’s hand leading,
guiding him sever upward. He
who leads travelled over the path-
way in the long ago, and knows
its pitfalls, and steers the sincere
soul around lurking dangers.
Those who yield hearts and lives
to Him for guidance will find the
strait ond narrow way an eidoy-
able one that leads straight
through to the kingdom of Uod.
The poet, Helen Hunt Jackson,
has given us these beautiful lines
that show the value of a surrend-
ered will: •
"Not as I will,” the sound grows
sweet
Each time my lips the words
repeat.
“Not as I will,
feels
More safe than light when this
thouhgt steals
Like whispered, voice to calm
and bless
All unrest and lonliness.
“Not as I will,” because the One
Who loved us first and best
has gone
Before us on the road, and still
For us must all His love fulfill.

way by these narrow, upward
roads with whicli so many of His
listeners were so familiar. He used
this illustration to simplify His
statements regarding some of the
funclamen'als of Christian living.
The golden rule, which He had
just given them, was difficult to
understand. This illustration serv-
ed to point out that‘observing it
would also be difficult, and that
only a few could and would do so.
Tile bulk of mankind would take
the easier way, the broad way,
that leads to destruction.
The broad day, which Jesu6
Himself said leads to death, is
wide enough for men to travel
harboring all their selfishness,
pride, and dishonesty. There is
room enough for every man's
opinions ana doctrines, and space
to follow his own inclinations at
all times. To go that way there is
no need for search, for the road
is indeed wide, and multitudes
travel it.
But the Heavenly Master says
the road to life is narrow, and
th.d the entrance is strait. Then
He ifds. “And few th< re be that
find it." Those who cling to sin
will find the way too narrow to
nter. There is not room on that
road for even the petty predju-
dices that characterize the ordi-
nary man. Those too must be laid
aside. We must give up our own
ways, our evil habits and practices
if we are to travel the upward
Christian way. Those who serve
Christ cannot follow the world’g
; opinions, or meet the world’s
