Concerning
Miracles
ED TODD
This lesson over the next few weeks is not saying that prayer is not a tool of
Christians, not God’s providence working through natural law is not in the world today.
But miracles (we mean miraculous gifts or signs of the Spirit - the sigiiaaad wonders that
were to accompany those who believed, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost of Apostolic
days) are not possessed today. There is ample scripture to prove that men do not have such
miraculous gifts today. -
Notice Ephesians 4:11-13, “And He gave some apostles; and some prophets; and some
evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of
U&Jninistry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come to the unity of the faith,
and the knowledge of the Bon of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the statue of
the fulness of Christ." These men were inspired with miraculous ability. Three things are
told to us in the passage: (1) What gifts were; (2] Their purpose; (3) How long they would
last. Their purpose, “for the perfecting of the saints.” Their duration, “Til we all come to
the unity of the faith, and knowledge of the son of God.” That unity or fulness of knowledge
came in the full revelation of the New Testament - which they did not have in fulness when
the special gifts were in force. These “special gifts” were to continue until the full
revelation of God's word. Since that was done, with the completion of the New Testament,
the special gifts were to be discontinued with the event. We have the sacred scriptures
proven and there is no longer k need for special miracles to confirm the word as then
preached. /
Notice Ephesians 4:13. “Til we all come in the unity of the faith.” This is the way the
King James version states it. The Revised Standard says, “Til we all attain unto the unity
of the faith.” In the marginal reading of the KJV, “into the unity of the faith.” Men say
Paul was speaking about the final unity for warring sects and gifts must continue til that
takes place. Thus, they feel this argument proves that special gifts are still in force.
Paul did not mean sects or denominations. No such thing had been established. They
came on the scene after the New Textament and the New Testament Church, and that
precious book has nothing to say about them. Never did Paul teach there would be unity
among demoninations of the day. Notice “we” that pronoun refers to the members of the
body, or church of Christ. And more, notice, “Til we all attain unto the unity of T-H-E
F-A-l-T-H." The faith means more than the faith of an individual in Christ; it includes the
whole teaching of Christ in the gospel, and the faith means the gospel. Look at Jude 3:
“earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” The scripture
plainly teaches that the meaning of “Til we all come in the unity of the faith” is the coming
of the unity of the gospel. They attained the unity of the faith when they reached faith as a
unity.
When the full and complete revelation was given to the Church, they attained the
unity of the gospel, because the gospel was then given as a unit. When the New Testament
was completed, that took place. This marked the time when the men named in this
passage would cease to possess spiritual gifts. There are no apostles today; the New
Testament does not say one word about them having successors. The apostles speak to us
through the authority of the writings of the New Testament. The apostles were eye
witnesses of our Lord's resurrection and with Him from His baptism until His ascension.
Unless the Lord gave such a witness this by a miraculous vision as He did to Paul there can
be no New Textament evidence of such taking place.
Anyone who claims such a vision today and claims to be an apostle is, therefore, a
fraud to be avoided I Romans 16-171. Neither are there inspired prophets today. There are
of course, evangelists, pastors telders), and teachers, but not with supernatural gifts.
— — — — — — — — —- — —| These gifts were needed “for the
perfecting of the saints, unto the
work of ministering, unto the
building up of the body, of Christ”
|v,12|. Now that is done by the
written and revealed word of the
New Textament. Since we have
“attained unto the unity of the faith”
in receiving the faith, or the gospel,
as a unit in the New Testament, as
certainly as that volume was
written, just that certainly have the
special gifts, or signs, that these
teachers, etc. possessed, stopped.
