Soybean Cyst
Nematode
Reaches State
The cyst nematode, for
many years an important
soybean parasite in the
Mississippi Delta region, re- .
cently has been found in
Northeast Texas. Just how this
unwelcome visitor arrived -
whether by infested seed, 1
bagging, soil on implements
moving across state lines, or by
bird movements - is open to
speculation. Blackbirds are
known carriers . of cyst
nematode eggs.
The cyst nematode is
similiar in many respects to the
root-knot nematode common in
garden soils and old cotton
land, but does not cause
noticeable galling oYirbots and ’
is much more difficult' to
control. Effective control
methods are limited chiefly to
crop rotation and to the
planting of resistant bean
varieties.
Infested areas found so far
are very small in size and at
this stage could easily be left
fallow to discourage spread of
the parasite via tillage
operations. Continuous spread
of the parasite is a serious
threat to soybean production
and producers should become
familar with foliage symptoms
producted on infested plants.
Foliage symtoms are most
easily spotted after plants are
waist high or after blooming,
and are characterized by a
yellow to whitish color of
leaves. Affected areas at this
time are likely to be confined to
small circular sopts 10-20 feet in
diameter or short strips 2-3
rows wide. Surveys are
underway by Texas Agricul-
tural Extension specialists now
to check all suspect fields in
Bowie and Red River Counties.
Surveys will be most effective,
however, if producers will
cooperatre in submitting root
samples from suspect areas to
their County Extension Office
for laboratory examination.
Early detection followed by
appropriate control practices
will help a great deal in
reducing future production
losses in infested fields and will
retard movement of the
parasite to present non-infested
fields.

Muddy spots, heavily
traveled paths, wet grass —
tMese are arguments in favor of
aqditional paved areas around
the home. Large areas such as
patios can* be done in either
stine or concrete. In using
cohcrete, outline the patio-to-be
in (wood or metal.
\ Dig out the earth to the
desired level and provide a base
of six inches of gravel. Pour
concrete over the gravel at
least four inches thick, and
finish off. ,
Old brick and patio blocks
may be used to make
mortarless patios. Excavate to
a depth that will allow for the
thickness of the material plus
three inches for a sand base.

New Burial
Benefits
Outlined
/ Two new veterans bene-
fits, part of the National
Cemetery Act approved by the.
President June 18, will become
effective in August and
Septemjber, according to Jack
Coker* Waco VA Regional
Office Director.
For veterans who die on or
after August 1, 1973, the
Veterans Administration can
pay a plot or internment
allowance of $150 in addition to
the $250 maximum already
authorized.
Starting September 1,
payment of fuperal expenses up
to $800 is authorized for
veterans who die of service-
connected causes.
Coker pointed out that VA
has for some time paid
allowances to funeral directors
or other persons who bore
veteran's burial expenses,
provided claims were filed
within two years of permanent
burial or cremation.
The agency also pays
transportation costs of veter-
ans whose deaths occur in its
hospitals or domiciliaries, or
who die while hospitalised or
being treated at the agency's
expense.
Coker said the current
maximum $250 burial allowance
has been in effect since 1958,
and traced this history of burial
allowances:
War Risk Insurance Act of
1917 provided up . to $100
toward burial expenses of
certain persons whose deaths
occured before discharge from
military service.
In 1923, allowance extend-
ed to veterans with insufficient
funds to cover buried expense*.
Economy Acts of 1933
reduced $100 allowance to $75.
Allowance restored to $lp0
by executive order in 1934.
Assests limitation on
allowances removed in 1936.
Maximum allowance in-
creased from $100 to $150
under Public Law 79-529 in
1946.
Public Law 85-674 increas-
ed allowance to current $250
maximum in 1958. *
