'A Tither And No Apologies
During the Budget Plan program
tailed in The First Methodist
Church, a series of tithing article}
will appear The following talk
v. .. made by Roy L. Smith and
made possible for local use. by
eumplimetts of the Texas Metho-
dist College Association, B"X 138.
SMI’, Da Hal
’ A TITHER AND NO
APOLOGIES'
1 I want to talk to you today,
very frankly, as one Christian to
another, about one of the most
delicate problems of our faith — j
one concerning which a great ma-
ny of us are verv sensitive
"l want to talk to you about
money.
"The reason I want to talk to
you on this subject i« because of
the fact that we seldom really
1 come to grips with the problem
We talk about it. around it, over
It. and on all sides of it, but we
never seem to talk it through
"There yvas a time when collec-
tions were an embarrassment to
me. I was arwaye asking myself
the question, “How much must 1
give to this cause'.’" I had the f* i l-
ing that 1 ought tn give, and that
it was somehow my duty, but I
didn't have any system I never
really felt happy about my yi% -
ing of other people, and I was .,!-
ways drawing compamions And
every time I w - isked to give I
had at least a little feeling of re-
sentment.
"Then one rlav I discovered the
secret My re. ding of thi Bible
suggested the giv.ng of the tithe
I knew the Jew J did th t and I
tried to persuade my-* If that I
was not under any suich obliga-
tion. "But," l asked myself, "does
a Jew have any more reason foi
giving than you h ive, as a Chris-
tian?" And of course I couldn't
answer that one very satisfactorily.
I was living under the gracious
rule of God, freed from tire dif-
ficult and burdensome laws. I had
so much more to Ik* thankful for
—I had Christ.
“So I decided to give onc-tenth
of my income, no; as a mere mat-
ter of obeying a law, but as a
•hankful expression of my faith in
C hrut.
"Almost mmediately I found my
pioblems solving themselves I
.■cased comparing my giving with
that of oiher people, and compar-
ed my ability to give with my own
income. That was a big gain in
its elf
"And then I discovered that
when I set aside one-tenth of my
income, when the money ome in-
to my possession. I always had
:'.mething to give 1 tell you truly,
the pain and embarrassment of
giving had all disappeared, and
every time I give 1 g"t a spiritual
thrill out of it. Collections no long-
er frighten me or make me irri-
table.
“I can't tell you whether I have
earned more money since I began
tithing or not Some people say
they do, but that is not the way
I measure dt. 1 get more satisfac-
tion out of giving my tithe out of
the same income than 1 ever did
before.
"I do believe God has helped
me handle the nine-tenths better
than I was handling the ten-tenth*
