A txiy who ran away from home
because of bad grades told awed
police how he dodged railroad
conductors in a cross-country trip
without a ticket
Eleven-year-old Michael McNa-
meo of San Mateo, Calif., added
the finishing touches to his adven-
ture when he got here, 2150 miles
from home, by seeing cowboy
movie star Gene Autry in * show
—without a ticket.
Mike walked into the police sta-
tion here Sunday morning, hungry
and in tears.
"1 was afraid I was going to
flunk and I wouldn't be with my
class,” lie said.
He told officers he ran away last
Thursday, wearing a school safety
patrol belt and an overseas cap,
and decided to visit his uncle and
aunt here
"1 only had 35 oen's in my pock-
et." he said, "but I wasn't wor-
ried much."
He first made his way to Oak-
land. I’ahf.. and boarded a Chi-
cago-bound Union Pacific trans-
continental passenger tram.
Mike related how he dodged the
conductor b* hiding in men's

when he had to. Getting a little
hungry on the way, he said "I
spent .1 dime on a roll of mints and

He made it to Chicago all right,
and it wasn't any trick for the vet-

train for Springfield, only a fe*v

what satisfied later when vendors

candy floss

gry again and decided to wind up
