CLARKSVILLE, TEXAS
Juvenile Officer Pat Tem-
ple reports handling nine cases
during August, most involving
minor offenses. Seven were
new cases and two were
repititions.
Offenses ranged from
vandalism, disorderly conduct,
runaway, incorrigble and
disturbance. The Police De-
partment referred two, the
Sheriffs department three and
parents and citizens the
remainder.
Red River County cur-
rently has eight youths in the
State Trainning School and out
of state care centers.
Temples said that "con-
trary to what has recently been
publicized during the Houston
juvenile slayings involving
runaways it is an offense to
runaway and juveniles may be
brought before the juvenile
court for repeated violations of
this offense."
Under the new Juvenile
Code which went into effect
August 27, runaways and
truancy offenses will be tried
under a heading called “Minor
in Need of Supervision.” A
vouth can be placed on Court
Probation for such offenses and
if probation is violated, they _
may be committed to the State
Training School.
Since 18 year olds are now
adults, it’s quite possible that
the more serious offender who
is 16 years of age could be
certified as an adult and
perhaps tried in adult court.
Temples said.
Temples again reminded
parents that they are subject to
fines should they permit their
children not to attend school.
The Compulsory School At-
tendance Law states that youth
must attend school until they
reach their 17 birthday, unless
graduated or under special
conditions, he said.
