LETTER TO EDITOR
Letter to the Editor:
Benjamin Franklin told
Tripoli that the United States
had millions for defense but not
one cent for tribute. President
Nijfhn told North Vietnam the
United Slates would get out of
South Vietnam and pay North
Vietnam $2.5 to $3.3 billion. He
doesn't call it tribute but that is
what it is. Nixon has had a hard
time of it because the
politicians, Communists, nit
wits and relatives of the
prisoners of war have all dope
everything they could do to
make the president make
condemn Nixon for bombing work as ”C. A.’a" —
the North but spent day conscientious objectors to any
praising Truman and he killed war anywhere — or. far worse,
more Japs than Nixon killed in prisons for refusing to serve
North Vietnamese. If we had in this particular war. Those
bombed the North sooner and who left the country simply
harder, we would have saved lacked the courage to either
many lives and could have stand up for what they said
gotten a treaty that would have they believed or take the route
been much better than what we of military service. Face facts,
got. They took the way that they
W. W. Whiteman thought would be easiest and
Avery, Texas
safest for them with very little
regard for principle.
To grant complete and
unconditional amnesty would
mock the sufferings of those
who had the courage of their
beliefs and paid the price
accordingly. There is no real
way to compensate them, but

Letter to the Editor:
I read the recent editorial
regarding amnesty for the draft
evaders who fled to foreign
countries with nothing short of
horror. Like a lot of others I
opposed the war in Vietnam —
all the way back to 1962 when
people didn't know what I was
talking about.
What appalls me is that
you seem to consider these
draft evaders who fled as being
brave men who left solely
because of their principles. I
can’t agree. The brave, moral
young men spent months and
years doing hard, usually
unpleasant jobs in assigned

To The Editor:
The Times, issue of March
1st, had an editorial “Amnesty
for Draft Evaders."
There is only one way this
group of cowards should be
allowed to come’ back to the
United States. That is through
due process of law, court trial,
and — I hope — long prison
sentences. Not one of these
men should ever be allow&Hft
hold public office, to hold any
government job, or to vdje.
They knowingly ahd willingly
deserted their country. Many of
t)i^se deserters and evaders
were a continual source of.
embarrassment to the United
States, issuing “underground
newspapers” filled With Com-
munist propaganda and reviling
the United States. On
numerous occasions, they held
rallies in France, in Sweden,
Canada and other countries —
rallies that were anti-U. S.
I disagree with Boyd Hurt
when he says, “The Vietnam
war has finally come to an end."
The Vietnam fiasco will not end
until the last American is
released from prison-of-war
camps. And I doubt that the
POWs are really tolerant of
draft evaders — until -the last
POW comes home, the ones
here now can’t really talk. The
communists that these sneaky
little draft dodgem seem to
worship are in no hurry to
release American POWs.
If these cowardly draft
evaders were really opposed to
the war, and not just thinking
of their own worthless hides,
they Could have asked to be
assigned to combat medics. I
knew conscientious objectors in
World War II who did this. I
knew ambulance drivers in
Korea; who did not believe in
killing, but wanted to save
lives. And I knew one medic,
utterly opposed to killing, who
changed his mind when his
medic buddy was shot as he
tried to rescue a wounded man.
Unfortunately, the present
crop of draft evaders can't take
the route of serving their
country in a * non-combat
position. No, they scurried to
Canada and Sweden and other
countries. As soon as they were
safely there, they began their
parades, their rallies, their
tirades against the U. S. They
allied themselves with Com
munisl organizations and
appeared on radio, spouting
hatred against the U.S.
government.
Now they want to come
back to the country they
deserted, the country they
reviled. If they had been
citizens of Communists coun-
tries, they would have been
shot or -beheaded before they
l^ft those countries. I say, let
them stay where they are or go
to the Commie countries they
profess to like. Do not let them
come back to the United States
except through legal process of
trial and — I sincerely hope —
conviction and long prison
sentences. We don’t need them
or their kind.
