Q. My recent increase in
my widow's social security
check was only $1.00, but my
sister, who is also a widow, got
an increase of $16.00. Why is
there so much difference?
A. If entitlement to
widow’s benefits began at age
60 to 62, there is very little or
no increase. The nearer to age
65 when widow’s benefits were
started, the higher the
increase. If no widow's benefits
were paid before age 65, the
rate is 100 percent of the
husband's amount. However, if
the husband became entitled at

Critter’s Corner
. A Sfcv '
By Mrs. Alice McBryde Marsh
(The following story was related by a young marine:)
World War 2 — We picked her up in a deserted, devastated
town in Guam, and adopted her as our mascot. She was
wounded, scared, and starving, but we soon had her cured,
sleek, and well. We named her Pooch, and she bacme the pet
of all of us. However, her special chum was our runner, who
made a bed for her beside his own. After D Day, he began
taking her with him on his trips to the front. One night the
runner did not know in what direction to send out searchers.
Nevertheless, we did decided to send out men in different
directions. We were about ready to leave when there came a
desperate scratching at the door. On opening it. Pooch
darted in and dropped the marine’s helmet at our feet, and
then we noticed that her mouth was raw and bleeding from
carrying the heavy burden so far. In spite of her pain,
exhaustion, and probably thirst and hunger, she would not
wait but, whining and barking, she dashed out the door with
a backward look which begged us to follow her. Several
marines went with her and she led them to her master who
lay wounded from a land mine, two miles from base. The
doctor said that within two more hours the Marine would
have died, but they were able to save him, thanks to the
gratitude and devotion of their mascot.
