165 Accidents
Investigated In
District for Sept.
There were 165 traffic acci-
dents investigated by the Texas
Highway Patrolmen in the Am-
arillo District during September,
according to information receiv-
ed this week.
Out of this number there
were 12 fatalities, 119 persons
injured and an estimated prop-
erty damage of $156,738. Of
the 165 accidents investigated,
there were 115 occurring on
state and federal highways.
Speeding was listed as the
number one cause of the Sep-
tember accidents with other
causes listed as driving while
drinking, driving on the wrong
side of the road, failure to
grant right of way and mis- ,
cellaneous hazardous violations.
In the first nine months of
this year there have been 80
fatalities, 652 persons injured
and an estimated total prop-
erty damage of $903,375.
On Sept. 1, the Amarillo Dis-
trict was enlarged to include
Motley, Cottle, Foard, Hardeman
and Wilbarger counties, making
a total of 31 counties in this
district.
In carrying out their basic
duties of traffic law enforce-
ment, the 42 patrolmen of the
Amarillo District No. 5B made
a total of 1167 traffic arrests<of
which 639 were for speeding and
40 for DWI.
