SPORTS GAB
The football classic of the nation
will be played this Saturday in Co-
lumbus Ohio when the Notre Dame
Ramblers tangle with the Ohio States
"Scarlet Scourge." This game will
more than likely decide who will be
national champion. Both teams have
as yet been undefeated or untied
in this seasons play but one or the
other Is sure to fall when these two
great teams tangle up Saturday.
Notre Dame has the best team that
has been In the South Bend school
since the days of the great Knute
Rockne. Coach Francis Schmidt at
Ohio State has duplicated the great
team that he put on the field last
year and throughout the season has
piled up a very large score on every
opposing team. It is the opinion of
this columnist that the "Green Wave"
from South Bend will take the Ohio
State boys Into camp but don't risk
your long greens on this statement.
The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets
defeated the Indians from McMurry
last week and by doing so kept their
record clean with the Abilene outfit.
As long as the two schools have been
engaged in athletic relations the In-
dians have never been able to take a
game from the Jackets.
Last week Joe Cheaney lost a very
disheartening game to the Hill Billies
from out on the hill. This game was
played in a quagmire of mud and rain
by the score of 3 - 0. Little Blllle
fullback booted a perfect field goal
from placement late in the last period
to give the Billies a win. The Bob-
cate were in the shadows of the Dan-
iel Baker goal line most of the game
but fumbles were costly to them and
they were not able to push over a
touchdown. This was the third loss
for Cheaney's team against two wins.
We still maintain that by the end of
the season the Babcats will be
whipped into shape and plenty hard
to handle.
The Hardln-Slmmons Cowboys went
down in defeat before the powerful
Southern Methodist Mustangs last
Saturday 18-6. The Simmons outfit
was the second team to cross the
Mustangs goal line this season
Washington University being the only
other school lucky enough to do the
feat. The game was played in Wichita
Falls on a field covered with mud. The
three Mustang touchdowns came with
the first stringers in the game and
also the Simmons lone counter at that
time. Two of the S. M. U. touch-
downs came as a direct result of
Hardin-Simmons fumbles in their own
territory. The Howard Payne stu-
dents should not get any misconcep-
tion about the oncoming game with
the Simmons outfit. This will be the
best team that the Jackets will face
this season after holding S. M. U.
to an 18-6 score while the Mustangs
trampled the Austin College team
60-0 one can readily see that they
really have a football team at the
Cowboy hang out this season.
The Jackets game with A. C. C.
tonight promises to be a thriller with
both teams flashing a great defense
combined with a good running and
passing attack. Anything is liable to
happen and one should not be sur-
prised at the outcome of the contest.
It is our unbiased opinion that the
Golden Swarm will come out on the
long end of a very close score. If the
Jackets have made up their minds to
win this game as they should have
we believe that they will not be de-
nied a win no matter what kind of
team Bugs Morris places upon the
field.
We notice that Buck Friedman star
backfield man for the Rice Owls ls
being sued in an Austin Court for
Child desertion by his wife Mrs. Wini-
fred Fridman. At the time of the
disagreement between the star half-
back and his wife Friedman was sup-
pose to pay her fifty dollars a month
out of the $140 that he is making
while attending school for upkeep of
the infant child. As has been the case
Freldman has not kept up these pay-
ments and now finds himself in-
volved in court procedure that is
very unpleasant and sometimes em-harassing.
The Brownwood High School Fight-
ing Lions were not engaged the past
week but they swing into full stride
this week when they take on the Abi-
lene Eagles in the Eagles own back-
yard. The Eagles will catch the Lions
on the rebound from their defeat by
Breckenridge. It is our guess that
the High School boys will give Coach
Dewey Mayhew's crew a hard fight
and if they get any of the breaks will
come out victorious.
This boy Pool is all that he was
"cracked up to be" and maybe a little
more. He is the shiftiest back seen
in action this year and he can truly
toss that pigskin around over the lot.
He ls really the sparkplug in the Mc-
Murry offense and without him the
Indians would not have been as suc-
cessful as they have been this season.
TAME THOSE WILDCATS
for
PA AND MA
Anthony is no slouch himself when it
comes to playing football. He tore
off some nice gains through the Jac-
ket line and he was on the receiving
end of Pool's 36 yard pass that netted
the Indians only score. He also is
a very neat punter getting off nice
long high kicks. Coach "Gloomy"
Medley should bo very proud of these
two boys.
Our worthy colleague and sports
writer for the McMurry War Whoop
in last week's edition dropped the
surprising summation that the How-
ard Payne Yellow Jackets would not
be in the running this year for the
coveted conference diadem. We wish
to remind our friend that after the
McMurry game it ls the Indians that
do not have a chance while the Yellow
Jackets still have an outside chance to
bring home the flag again.
The only thing for the Jackets to do
is to win all of the remaining games
and hope and pray for someone to
knock over the rampaging Kangaroos.
We believe that the Jackets can win
the rest of their engagements but It
is very doubtful if anyone can slip up
on the Austin College outfit and knock
them off. The student body of How-
ard Payne would be very grateful to
any team that might accomplish this
feat however.
Ministerial Council
Arrangements have been made sev-
eral times for Dr. Daughety to speak
to the Ministerial Council but since he
never knows definitely when he can
get off he has been unable to fill pre-
vious appointments. His address was
concerning the high standards of the
ministry and the opportunities for
world-wide benefit. It was received
with the greatest respect from this
friend of the college and student body
as a whole. His last admonition was
"Pray and read your Bible daily."
Regular street and jail services
were held this week.
A number of churches were sup-
plied for the past week and are as fol-
lows: J. F. Miller Valley View; J. C.
McGraw Holder; George Chase Hazel
Dell; B. C. Brown Jones Chapel; L. O.
McGallion Rock Springs; Loyd Cor-
der Shields.
Several assisted in Life Service
Band programs at Placid. O. W. Huff-
man preached at the CCC camp.
Three deacons were ordained at
Blanket. Brown Ranch Church called
C. O. Overstreet and Blue Ridge call-
ed F. R. Dill last Sunday.
