With Howard Payne and Trinity
University tied for the leadership of
the. Texas Conference loop and the
Rama of T. W. C. only one half game
behind first place percentage the
rest of the panics that arc to be play-
ed In the fast moving loop are ex-
ported to be hard fought affairs. The
leading teams are undergoing long
workouts for a loss of a game by any
of the leading teams means that they
arc out of the running for the season.
The games over the weekend involve
all four of the title contenders How-
ard Payne Ttinlty A. C. C. and T.
W. C.
The Jackets face the stubborn A.
C. C. squad Saturday night while T.
W. C. must face Daniel Baker In their
own field house. Daniel Baker could
spoil the Rams chances without much
upset on the dope sheets as they stand
in third place In the conference stand-
ings. St'. Edward's go to Waxahachle
Friday night where they will throw
their forces against the Tigers after
handing the leading Jackets a defeat
earlier In the week.
A. C. C. Is forced to win its game
with the Jackets Saturday night or
leave the race and they are expected
to give the Jackets a fight that will
be noticed. The Wildcats have won
nil their games by a long score except
for two losses to Trinity by a small
figure.

First Loop Loss
St. Edward's University led by
Bob Doctsch upset tlic weary How-
ard Payne Cagers 43-to-30 In Austin
Tuesday night February 14. It was
the first conference defeat for the
travel-worn Yellow Jackets In seven
starts. St. Edwards took the lead in
the first quarter and never lessened
their hold on the slight margin they
held. The Jacket defeat was the
fourth conference win for St. Edwards
In seven starts. Howard Payne defeat-
ed St. Edward's In a conference game
here earlier In the season but their
travel-weary legs could not' stand up
under the ciampcd style of playing on
the victors home court.
Doctsch scored five field goals and
three tree shots to tie the 13 points
of Warren tall Jacket forward. Odell
Howard Payne center and Ed Norris
St. Edward's star center landed 10
points each.
TEXAS U. QUINTET
RATED FAVORITE
Texas University's Stceis are now
being rated as the favorites of the
Southwest Conference basketball race
after the S. M. U. Ponies bowed to
the Baylor club last Saturday night.
To get off to a bad start did not
bother the Steers in their fight for
first place honors as they pulled from
the bottom of the list to the top to
battle the S. M. U. Ponies on the
Austin hardwood last night.
. Baylor after taking a second place
stand in the list bowed to the Pork-
cis for a twin bill loss and dropped
then into a knot for third position on
the line up with their conquerors.
However after they defeated the
leading Ponies they are rated as a
real tin cat to the clubs that hold the
top place on the standing sheet. With
one of their toughest games of the
season coming up next Saturday night
with Texas University on foreign
floor the crisis will soon be at hand
as to their come-back for tiie first
place honors.
The Porkers that are paced by
two sharpshooting sophomores John
Adams and Red Hickey hold the third
place but are not expected to be a
real threat to the leaders of the con
ference. The Arkansas boys collect-
ed two scalps out of their five from
the lowly T. C. U. Frogs last Satur-
day night in the Frog fieldhouse. It
seems that it is impossible for the
Froga to collect a win from any team
in the conference. The A. & M.
boys are not in a much better position
as they have won only one conference
tilt during the current season.
T. C. U. meets Bice in Houston
tonight that will probably result in
Rice holding a knot for second place
honors. The Frogs play the Aggies
at A. &M. Friday night and Satur-
day night Baylor invades the Texas
University field house while S. M.
U. plays Rice at Houston.

ision of the Golden Gloves left

the Brownwood medal in a decision
bout with the 176 pound Ralph Hicks
of Daniel Baker.
Wado "Biff" Butler Howard Payne

Ha! Ha! Don't look now we arc
laughing the old concealed tip-tho-slecve
type. We noticed In the paper
the other day where one friend sports
writer allowed as to how the Jackets
were playing above their heads the
other night In Ft. Worth when the
Keaton five sort of In an honest to
goodness basketball game pushed the
confident Rams out of their hold on
the first place honors of the Texas
Conference basketball race. And a
few days ago we saw where the
Jackets were in the first place notch
only because they had not played
anyone of importance. We should not
laugh tho for in the same story there
was a sad tale relating how the Rams
were off to the extent that they
couldn't push one through with a
stick. Dear me Howard Payne should
not upset the old dope sheets like that;
a teum that could not rate over a
third place In the conference anyway.
Too bad that the most of the fans
can't see the round ball hustlers in
action this week but our time is
coming next week when three confer-
ence games will be played on the
local floor. Who knows pel haps the
Jackets play above their heads all
the time It can be expected on their
own home court at least.
Ever since the Porkers from Ark-
ansas everything but shattered the
Baylor Bear's hopes for the South-
west Conference crown they hold
three men right at the top of the
scorers in the big loop. Grady
Vaughn a 23 year old guard from
Atoy holds the top honor for the
Bears. He is only a sophomore and
played with the championship fresh-
man team last year that won the
State A. A. U. tournament. Along
with Vaughn Is the six foot two and
half inch Lacy Creasey who has prov-
ed that he can hit the basket under
pressure or not. Pete as the star
forward is known on the Baylor cam-
pus is a Junior and can handle the
ball as well as any man in the South
Velez Named Head
Of Tennis Club
Tennis excitement made Itself man-
ifest on the Howard Payne campus
last week for the first time this season
In the organization of a tennis club.
In the first step taken toward in-
tramural sports campaign four boys
and four girls were seeded to be on
the squad until a tournament can be
held to designate the regular team.
Angle Velez who was number two
man of the team last year was
elected president of the club. Chas.
Strong who was a late starter last
year but made a brilliant showing in
the last of the season In the semi-
finals in the Brown County tourney
was elected vice-president. Jean
Stephens secretary and treasurer has
also made an outstanding record in
the tennis circles by going to the
finals in the state division from
Paint Rock.
Roy Fox ctptain and last year's
number one singles and doubles man
will not defend his championship this
year as result of back Injury sustained
during the summer months.
Brackets will be posted and the
playoff will be started as soon as
the courts have been put in shape.
Two out of three sets will be played
until the finals. After these pre-
liminary matches three out of five
sets are required. The matches to
be played are posted on the bulletin
board 'n the Mims building.

Is the ladles man on the Baylor squad.
He Is six four and tops the scales at
100 pounds. He has a regular Joe
College philosophy of paying all his
attention to girls and letting work
take care of Itself. Life is full of
wonders and one of them Is how
Baylor can keep three men on the top
five scorers but only rate third place
in their flag chase.
Texas University takes tho favor-
ite's chair in the loop now since the
Ponies of S. M. U. dropped a game
to Texas and Baylor last week. Just
on the sideline we noticed that In the
game between the Steers and A. &
M. Saturday night four men on the
Steer quintet were cx-Tarleton bask-
otcers the same being the nue of
the A & M five. The Steer five eon-
tained Hull. Finlcy Tate and Speare
whilvi the A. &. M lineup ahuwtd Tsuk-
cr Ulan a ..i.ti und Carigan The
Steers outclassed the Aggieu fo a
narrow margin of four points. That
old saying about a bad start means a
good ending is holding good with the
Texas University club. The rest of
their conference tilts are to be on
their own hardwood and the observers
agree that to win a clear title they
will have to take the four games that
arc left.
Out at the stadium the knights of
the cinder path keep the empty stands
filled with choes of fast breathing and
soft tattoos of spikes digging into
the soft turf - Might be the whisper
of records that are to be taken March
4 in the Border Olympics soon we'll
see.
And over the Atlantic three bombs
exploded at a rugby game between
England and Ireland. The Jackets may
not have anything that exciting next
season but something Is likely to
blow up when Coach Keaton shows
three or four crack backficlds next
fall.
Wildcats Foe Of
Jackets Saturday
Many Howard Payne fans will fol-
low the Yellow Jackets to Abilene
Saturday night February 18 when
the Howard Payne cagers and Abi-
lene Christian College clash In a
game that will definitely eliminate
one team from the Texas Conference
cage championship race.
A. C. C. defending champion of the
Texas Conference Circuit has one of
the strongest teams in the Texas
Conference and has won many games
by large margins. In seven confer-
ence games played to date the Abi-
lene Christian cagers have dropped
only two games.
The Wildcats end a two game
series with Daniel Baker tonight.
The Jackets have had a hard week
of road games.

EAST TEXAS STATE
TITLE FAVORITES
The Lone Star Conference almost
completes its scheduled games this
week with the East Texas Lions in
a comparatively easy position to take
the flag. This is the first season to
have a team take an almost undis-
puted cage title from the rough Lone
Star conference teams.
The Lions headed by Coach Dennis
Vinzant have won all five of the con-
ference clashes and are two full games
ahead of the Sam Houston Bearkats
the nearest opposition. With three
more games in the schedule the Lions
need only to take one to cinch the
title. However the hardest games of
the season are coming up this week
as the Lions must face Stephen F.
Austin and Sam Houston two second
place teams in the Lone Star divis-
ion. Last week the Lions defeated
Southwest Texas 51 to 31 and Sam
Houston bowed before the leaders 38
to 31.
The other game scheduled for this
week is between two lower division
teams North Texas and Southwest
Texas. Southwest Texas occupies
the cellar under Noith Texas who
have won two out of three confer-
ence tilts this season. The game
will be played In San Marcos.

there are a few fool-proof rules that

That makes him feci lie has accom-

If you have heard anything nlco

Don't ever ask him when you'll
