Can You Stand Yourself?
Rev. Wm. E. Elliott, pastor
Church of the Nazarene
teacher of his day, and in his
corner of the world. Gamaliel
was a member of the
Sanhedrin Counsel, the ruling
body of the Jews, as such, his
teachings centered strongly
around the tenets of Jewish
law.
Paul, prior to his
conversion, and when he was
known as Saul, enforced the
Jewish law to the best of his
ability. In those legalistic days,
Saul tried to stamp out the
spreading sect of Christianity;
he even consented to the
matyrdom of Stephen. Saul
could not however, stamp out
the mental torture of his
memory. He could not forget
the death-scene of Stephen,
calling upon God and saying,
“Lora Jesus, receive my
spirit.” Saul could not forget
the noble scene of Stephen
kneeling down as he was
stoned to death, and saying,
“Lord, lay not this sin to their
charge.”
Saul knew he could never
die such a noble death while in
bondage to Jewish law. Saul
could not get away from
himself; He could not fool
Rom. 7: 24 “0 wretched man
that I am! Who shall deliver me
from the body of this death?”
Men and women have
trouble occasionally in getting
along with others; But most of
us can get along with
ourselves! Axel Munthe once
said, “A man can stand a lot as
long as he can stand himself;
He can live without hope,
without books, without
friends, without music as long
as he can listen to his own
thoughts.” If this is true (and
there is reason tobelieveit is),
every man and woman should
cultivate a self, with which he
or she can live in peace and
happiness!
It is common knowledge
that a person can fool others,
and get away from others;but
there isn’t any person who can
fool himself or herself, or get
away from one’s self. Neither
can one get away from God, or
fool God.
The apostle Paul was a man
who had tried to get away
from himself. He was one of
the most learned men of his
day. He had studied under
Gamaliel, the most influential
new day is as pure as morning
dew upon the face of a rose!
Toothers, each day is just
another drag; and the last rose
has shed its peddals upon life’s
sterile dust!
Have you ever thought
there is not a person upon this
earth who cares a thing about
you? I heard a man one time,
who constantly felt this way.
He did not believe his family
loved him; he did not feel he
had any friends; he did not feel
there was any worthwhile
thing to life. He was alienated
from God, and isolated from
his fellowmen. So one day he
went out and shot himself
dead.
Do you feel like that? Are
you potentially a statistic in an
emergency ward? Paul felt the
same way before he got himself
right with God.
I said earlier, “You have to
live with yourself, you have to
live with what you are.. . .”
But what happens, when you
are so rotten that you can’t
even stand yourself?
If you cannot stand
yourself - I must tell you,
neither will you be able to
stand anyone else! One man
said, “If you cannot stand
yourself, you are destined to
die by yourself.”
God can change the person
you are, to the person He
wants you to be! If you
become the person God wants
you to be, you will then
discover the new image is what
you should have been, all
along!
Near the end of a full and
complete life, the Apostle Paul
was able to say, honourably,
“I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course, I
have kept the faith..
What fight have you fought?
What courses have you
finished? What faith have you
kept?
Are you able to live happily
with yourself? With others?
What God through Christ, did
for the Apostle Paul, He can
also do for you!
God is perfect: therefore
why not be made perfect in
Him, through Jesus Christ?
Alfred Lord Tennyson once
said, “I am part of all I have
met...” Meet the heavenly
Father through the Lord Jesus
Christ, and let Him become
part of you!
