Vexed And Perplexed
Russell M. Smith, Sr. pastor
Christian Chapel
Just recently a paper came
to me through the mail with a
message written by one of our
representatives from the state
of Ohio in our Congress at
Washington relating some of
the questions asked our high
school young people who are
preparing for college. Among
those questions that he quotes
are these: “Which is worse —
to laugh at God, or to laugh
when the Star Spangled
Banner is being played?” And
there are many more vexing
questions asked that infer to a
young mind how ridiculous it
is to have a Christian faith. I’m
vexed and perplexed because I
cannot understand how a
nation “under God’ will stand
by and permit our young
people to be “bombarded” by
such a mockery of everything
this nation was founded upon,
and proclaim to believe to be
true.
Just as vexing and
perplexing to me, however, is
the problem of Christian
parents who insist that their
college-age children go to
colleges where professors
teach that the Bible is
“second-rate” literature. That
further teach that it is
“old-fashioned” to believe in
the Bible today. I’m vexed and
perplexed!
But then, let’s look at
Christian parents. The above
stated facts don’t seem so
vexing and perplexing when
you consider that many
Christian parents can find on
Sunday morning that their
children are too sick to go to
church, and Bible school.
BUT, on Monday morning, the
same children just can’t afford
to miss school (we must be
sure that they get that perfect
attendance certificate, you
know). Or how about this -
children can go to football
' t, or basketball
games at nij
games at night, be out to 10 or
11’o’clock, but they can’t be
brought to church on Sunday
night - they just have to get
their rest.
I’m vexed and I’m
perplexed! Vexed because I
don’t think it it fair to our
teenage young people to have
to answer questions like those
above in order to get into
college...vexed because our
young people are being robbed
of a precious heritage by
professors who owe their
opportunity to be teachers to
the blessed privileges Christian
faith affords us...vexed
because Christians are so
unkind and unthoughtful of
their children’s future. I’m
perplexed that we don’t do
some ing about the
situation...How about you?
