Down Golden Cranes
The Kermit Yellow Jacket
junior varsity football team
traveled to Crane on
Saturday, September 9 to do
battle with the Cranes. The
Jackets came away with a 22
to 0 victory in a hard-hitting
ball game.
The Jackets scored two
touchdowns in the first two
minutes of the game as they
scored just after the opening
kickoff and again as Crane
turned the ball over on their
first offensive play.
The first Jacket
touchdown came on an
option from Quarterback
Kelly Creager to Shannon
Cooke and Cooke rambled 33
yards into the end zone.
Cooke then led Malcolm
Bryant around right end for
the two point conversion.
After the kickoff and the
Crane fumble, the Jackets
took over and Bryant
immediately toted the ball
around left end and sprinted
20 yards across the goal line
for the Jackets second
touchdown in less than two
minutes. Cliff Couey added
the PAT and Kermit grabbed
a 15 to 0 lead.
Crane took control of the
game after those two
touchdowns however, and
stopped the Jackets offense
from then until the half but
were kept out of trouble by
the punting of Ray Boring,
who punted the ball six times
for 198 yards and a 33 yard
' average.
Kermit also put up a gutsy
defensive stand at the end of
the half as the Golden Cranes
drove down to the Jacket
four yard line before time ran
out in the half. The Jacket
i —
defense has not let up a point
in either their two
scrimmages or their first
game. Thus, Kermit took a
15-0 lead into the half.
The third and final score of
the game came early in the
third quarter as Creager
carried the ball over from
four yards out to put Kermit
ahead 22 to 0 after Couey’s
PAT split the uprights.
Crane mounted another
drive in the fourth quarter as
they moved the ball to the
Jackets ten yard line before
the Jackets picked off an
erractic pass in the Kermit
end zone to end the drive.
Cooke led Kermit rushers
during the night with 123
yards on 11 carries. Bryant
followed Cooke with 51
yards on eight carries.
Lyndale Widner also carried
the ball seven times for 41
yards.
“We were pleased with the
overall victory,” said Coach
Glen Christian. “Our only
dissapointment was that we
didn’t look polished overall as
a team. Hopefully, this will
improve by next week.”
The junior varsity’s next
game will be against the
Odessa Sophomores on
Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
at Coleman Field in Odessa.
This field is located behind
the Odessa High School
Building.

clipping penalty.
Kermits third touchdown
came again from Wright as he
carried the ball over from 5
yards out. David Yett caught
a Wright pass for the
two-point conversion to make
the score 22-6 in Kermits
favor.
The last score of the game
came on a 6 yard pass from
QB Garry Speed to Martinez.
Speed also carried the ball
over for the two-point
conversion to give the Jackets
a 30-6 lead. Kermit

more like it as the Jackets

score of 15-9. Enox led
The third game was almost
a total runaway as the Kermit
fish controlled and won the
game by the score of 15-5.
The leading scorer for the
Jackets this time was Fullen
with seven points. McGilbra
had three points while
Hernandez, Rockwell,
Harbin, and Rivera had one
apiece.
“The first game was a
disaster but the girls finally
calmed down and played
their own game instead of Ft.
Stocktons the next two
games,” said Coach Lois Ann
McKenzie.
“Lori Fullen played
scorers this time with five especially good ball and I was
poihts. She was followed by fairly pleased with the overall

with two each. DeSharon
McGilbra, Melanie Harbin and
Mary Rivera scored one point
each for the Jackets.
Contest Winners
Announced
K. L. Percifield of Kermit
won the first prize of $15 in
The News’ Football Contest
last week. Lupe Garcia and
Layne Nutt tied for second
and will split the $10 second
prize.
Percifield was the only
entry to guess all the games
correctly. He was one of only
three entries to guess the
Ozona-Reagan County game
correctly.
Both Garcia and Nutt
missed only the
Ozona-Reagan County Game,
and both missed the Tie
Breaker by only one point.
Garcia picked 31, and Nutt
33. The actual score was 32.
The official entry form
appears in each Thursday’s
edition of the News, and
must be turned into the News
office before 5 p.m. Friday
afternoon.
Rockwell and McGilbra
scored one each.
“Our major problem is our
relays,” said Coach Lentz,
“We will work on these
before our next game. As a
team the girls played well
together.
The Jackets next game will
be against the Monahans
Loboes in Monahans on
Tuesday, Sept. 19 and will
begin at 6 p.m.
Jackets To Play
D.C. Mustangs
The Kermit Yellow Jacket
varsity football team will take
on the Denver City Mustangs
this Friday night, Sept. 15.
The Jackets are coming off a
26-6 routing of the Alpine
Bucks while Denver City lost
to Crane in their last outing.
According to Coach J. E.
Todd, who scouted the
Mustangs last week, “Denver
City is not a large team but
can come out and get after
you.
“Defense is the strongest
part of the Mustang game but
they have a few players with
exceptional speed. Kenneth
Kavez is the strongest man on
the Mustang team as a
offensive back.”
Friday night game will
begin at 8 p.m. and will be
played at Walton Field in
Kermit.
