Daubers Shut Out Andrews
The Kermit 8th grade
Daubers scored once in the
first quarter, once in the
second, and again in the
fourth, shutting out Andrews
24-0.
The Daubers kicked off,
and after several plays,
Andrews found themselves on
the Kermit 19-yard line. But
that was the end of the
potential scoring drive, due to
the excellent effort on the
part of the Dauber defense.
Starting from their own
19, Kermit took only six
plays to score their first TD.
The drive was climaxed by a
1-yard plunge by Ramon
Lopez. Lopez was the leader
of the drive with four carries
for 70 yards, with Roger
Short adding another 11
yards on two carries. A
pitchout from QB Jerry
Wright to Eugene Muniz put
the Daubers out in front 8-0.
An Andrews fumble
recovered by Bert Widner on
the 43 set up the second
Dauber score. <' Lopez and
Short once again had good
gainers, and this time it was
Eugene Muniz going over the
line from 34 yards out. Lopez
carried for the EPA, giving
the Daubers a 16-0 halftime
lead.
Kermit’s final touchdown
came in the final stanza on a
72-yard drive capped by
Roger Short’s six-yard
scramble to paydirt. Lopez
again carried the EPA,
rounding out the scoring with
Kermit on top 24-0.
The final buzzer sounded
with the Daubers on the
Andrews one-yard line.
Named as outstanding
offensive players by coach
Ken Mays were Jimmy
Arnold, Dale Greene, Mike
Fierro, Bert Widner, Flyn
Williams, Bobby Nunez,
David Yett, Jesse Cordona,
Jerry Wright, Eugene Muniz,
Roger Short, and Ramon
Lopez.
Outstanding defensive
players named were Bobby
Hancock, Paul Owen, Kevin
Fikes, Alvie Fuller, Mike
Fierro, Roger Short, Bert
Widner, Ramon Lopez, Mike
Cooper, Eugene Muniz, and
Tony Ruiz. -
Coach Mays was impressed
with his team’s improvement
in recent weeks, and
especially with this one. “We
had another good game both
on offense and defense. We’ve
made so much improvement
in the last three garnet . . .
we’re really hitting good, and
our blocking is a lot better.
Our defense is really playing
tough.”
