Saveli Shows Promise SWC Teams Busy
At Up-Back Position
Coach Hanzal Mangum has
made a lineup swap for the Cedar
Bayou-La Porte football game at
p. m. tomorrow, and he be-
lieve* the switch will give the
Bruins added power as they go
into their third district 27A cam-
paign of the season.
Already winners over Web-
ster and Crosby, the Bears are
primed to give their across-the-
channel friends a run for their
money.
Coach Mangum has been work-
ing Hershcel Smith, a former
guard, all week in the backfield
and De Bruhl, who has been hold-
ing down one of the bock field
slots, has been moved to guard.
Smith looks tike the makings
of a real back, and the Bruin
mentor hopes the change will give
his team more offensive sharpness.
The contest with the Bulldogs
will be the final test for the locals
before their do-or-die contest with
the Aldine Mustangs here a week
from enxt Friday The Bears will
be favored to defeat La Porte,, but
the game should be interesting.
La Porte gave Aldine a whale of
a battle before succumbing by a
score of 19 to ?.
The probable starting lineups:

Schima ______ $E .... Pittman
Perkinson ... LT ..... Benson
T.G .... Fletcher
James Saveli did a stint under
center yesterday In scrimmage on
new plays to be used in the Con-
roe game Friday night, and the
tali lad from Highlands showed
plenty of promise.
That and some fine place-kick-
ing by Byron Haney at the tall
end of the workout featured the
final offensive drill prior to enter-
tainment of the Montgomery coun-
ty aggregation.
There was every Indication that
Saveli will play plenty against
and he may be the answer until
Jack Kraft is ready to resume his
old position.
This move frees J. W. Stperner
to return to halfback, but in all
probability Stoerner will continue
ot call the plays while he is In
the game. There was little wrong
with the generalship of Stoerner
in the Lufkin game.
The Ganders went through a
spirited drill on passing. At the
outset the success was not too
outstanding but as the workout
progressed, the receivers started

FORT WORTH, Oct. 18.~ (UR) —
Southwest Conference elevens are
still practicing their old habit of
cannibalism. Only three conference
games have been played to date,
but In this trio of contests each
competing team has managed for
a victory over the other.
TCU beat Baylor (7-6). Arkansas
defeated TCU (27-H), then Baylor
won from Arkansas (23-13). The
only teams that benefited from
that cut-throat operation were the
four that haven't played a family
contest yet. *
With 24 of 1945’s scheduled 52
games played! who will win the
conference title ia just about as
uncertain as it was when compe-
tition stffrted Sept. 15. 4
The Texas Longhorns are cur-
rently on top, with four victories
and no defeats. But the Steers
haven’t looked too good against
their better opponenU, agd they
might easily trip up As they now
begin the mighty tafer of playing
six conference gamto in a row —
the first, against Arkansas In Little
Rock Saturday./ 1
Rice and SHU, of the showings
to date, appear wgfcker than the
rest of the field. The two meet in
Dallas Saturday, arid the Ouris, by
virtue of their victory over TUlane,
wilkbe mildly favored.
