TRIAL
CONTINUED FROM PAGE !
In another Tuesday
development, one of the
Baytown police officers
testifying seemed to suf-
fer memory problems on
the stand'
Detective Juan Reyes’
difficulty with details on
relatively simple ques-
tions from either the pros-
ecution or defense
prompted a blunt question
from Harris County pros-
ecutor Sunni Mitchell.
“Detective Reyes, did
you review your office
report before coming to
court today?” Mitchell
asked.
Reyes acknowledged he
hadn't
T tried to finish but I
didn't get a chance,”
Reyes said.
Ciraber objected to
allowing Reyes to read
his report w'hile on the
stand because he felt the
detective would be testi-
fying more from the text
than from his own memo-
ries.
Later in the day
Tuesday, prosecutors
called to the stand a
Houston officer who had
tracked the defendant’s
movements around the
time of the murder by
gauging w'here his cell
phone had been.
The prosecution called
Officer James Taylor with
Evading
A police officer who tried
to stop a motorist for speed-
ing on Massey Tompkins
Road about I a m. Tuesday
w as led on a brief pursuit.
After the male driver
stopped in a driveway on
Barkuloo Road, he got out
of the car, made and
obscene gesture at the offi-
cer. and knelt down with his
hands oil his head to be
arrested, police said.
He was charged with
evading arrest.
Burglaries
• Unspecified property
was reported stolen from
the KXK) block of Massey
Tompkins Road between
noon Sunday and 2:30 p.m.
Monday,
• Tools and a briefcase
were reported stolen from a
vehicle parked at a motel in
the Houston Police
Department’s criminal
instigation division.
Taylor testified he had
tracked the movements of
the defendant’s phones by
calculating nearby cell
towers.
But, ultimately, defense
attorney Graber asserted,
it proves nothing.
"None of this can tell
you who was actually on
the phone at the time can
it?” the defense attorney
asked.
Taylor acknowledged it
couldn't.
Despite all these devcl-
opments Tuesday. Jean
paid little attention to the
goings on in court.
Instead, he focused on
his laptop, at times read-
ing from it so intensely
his lips were moving.
According to his attor-
neys, Jean was reading a
compilation of trial notes
and strategies from the
laptop.
Toward the end of the
day, bizarre testimony
was offered by a woman
who had both slept with
the defendant and also
volunteered to police to
get a murder confession
from him
Lisa Hill. 43, of Winnie
alleges she had a sexual
relationship with the
defendant
She testified in court
Tuesday from a wheel-
chair and w hile wearing a
neck brace.
She attributed both to a
seizure-induced injury.
During Cross examina-
tion by prosecutor Jane
Waters. Hill admitted she
made it a point to try to
get a confession from
Jean for police -
although JCan had denied
having anything to do
with the slayings.
Hill said she believed
Jean’s innocence but the
actions she verified in
court Tuesday seemed to
indicate the contrary
Hill admitted approach-
ing police at one point
and offered to get a taped
confession to the crime
from Jean.
Waters asked Hill if.
when talking to Baytown
police officers, she had
asked to be allowed to
wear a "wire" between
her breasts. Waters also
asked if, during that inci-
dent, Hill referred to her
breasts as "Ben" and
"Jerry."
Hill did not give a clear
answer to that specific
question from Waters,
although she indicated the
general story was correct.
While Hill was on the
stand Waters pushed to
get her to acknowledge
that the idea of volunteer-
ing to Solicit information
from Jean was her own
idea and that police had
not recruited her.
At the time of the mur-
ders, the defendant is
alleged to have been
the 4600 block of Interstate
I0 between 10:30 p.m.
Sunday and 4 p.m. Monday.
* Unspecified property

vehicle parked at a business
in the 5000 block of Garth
Road between 4:50 and
6:30 p.m. Monday.

ed stolen from an apartment
in the 1800 block of James
