The roster for the Texas
side of the ninth annual
Bayou Bowl boasts 40
players front the greater
Houston area, but only two
front Goose Creek CISD.
Adrian Middleton from
Ross S. Sterling High
School will line up at
defensive end for the
Texas side while Goose
Creek Memorial Patriot
Kendall Wilkerson will get
playing time on the offen-
sive line and at deep snap-
per tor the home team.
"I've been watching the
Bayou Bowl since I was a
freshman in high school.
I've wanted to play in it
for years and I finally got
my opportunity," said
Middleton. "It's something
we talked about a lot dur-
ing practice and it’s an
awesome feeling to get to
participate."
Both players recently
graduated from their
respective high schools
and will get one more
chance to show w hat they
have on the gridiron before
moving on to college.
"I've been looking for-
ward to playing in the
Bayou Bowl for quite a
while," said Wilkerson. "I
graduated on Friday and
now I get to play one last
game in Stallworth
Stadium. It’s a great feel-
ing. I've been to the last
four Bayou Bowl games
and always told my dad I
wanted to play in the game
one day and I got chosen
to play."
Saturday's kickoff may
be the most anticipated
part of the week for the
young athletes, but the
activities the players arc
getting the opportunity to
participate in are surely

something to look forward
to.
"We get treated like a
king for a week. We also
get to practice at Reliant."
said Middleton,
"It's always nice looking
forward to getting treated
like that. It's nice knowing
we were chosen for the
game because not many
players gei the chance."
said Wilkerson "I'm look-
ing forward to meeting
new people and becoming
a better athlete.
Included in the activities
for the athletes is a prac-
tice session at Reliant
Stadiurn. a player banquet,
trips to Pirates Bay and
Kemail Boardwalk, three
meals a day and more.
Middleton will continue
his football career at
Prairie View A&M
University while Wilk-

season.
TLl competes in
NCAA Division-Ill in the
American Southwest
Conference where it fin-
ished 4-6 last season while
the Prairie View Panthers
play in the Southwest
Athletic Conference,
which: they won in 2009.
"I wasn't too excited
about Prairie View at first,
but after I spoke w ith the
Coaches and some of the
guys on the team. I knew I
would like it." said
Middleton. "They won the
SWAC in 2009 and are
getting a new stadium. I
like the move they arc
making and I want to he a
part of it I have a good
opportunity to play . right
away, it \ not too far from
home arid I got a lull ride "
Prairie View is a small
school with around 9.0(10
students, but TLl; is one of
the smaller colleges in
Texas in terms of under-
graduates with just 1.400.
and that appealed to
Wilkerson
"TLU is a small, tight-
knit community and has a
bright future It's a smaller
school and I w ill get a lot.
of one-on-one time with
the teachers." said

have received an offer
from a Division-1 school. I
would’ve gone, but didn't
get the chance. So I'm

W ilkeison and Midd-
leton will continue their
football careers on die col-
legiate level, but for both
of the college athletes, suc-
cess m the classroom is
just as important as suc-
cess on the field.
While the pair shares a
passion for football, they
also share the same aca-
demic goals
"I plan ■ on studying
mechanical engineering,
and Prairie View has a
great engineering school,"
said Middleton.

I lie Bayou Bow l media day w as
held Tuesday at Stallworth
Stadium following the arrival of
the two teams in Baytown arid a
welcome meal prov ided by local
restaurants
As the players arrived and stood
in the 3 o'cock sun for an hour
waiting to take individuals and
team photos, local media, includ-
ing me. perused groups of Texas
and Louisiana football players to
get their best shots and quotes.
While Antoine Turner provided
comic relief Tor the Louisiana
squad. I caught up with Ouachita
C hristian High School s Paul
Garner, who will play quarterback
for the Louisiana team, and his
teammate, l ake Charles' Dillon
Berlin, who will take handoffs at
tailback for the visiting squad.
"It's been a lot of fun getting to
know all of my teammates. We've
been talking about where we came
from and what positions we play."
said Garner. "I'm roommates with
Leon Blouin and have gotten to
know him. and I threw to Carl
Pearson (a Louisiana wide receiv-
er) last week."
"It's pretty fun showing up and
seeing all the athletes. Walking
into the stadium was cool. It's
big," said Berlin. “I’ve never been
to or seen a Bayou Bowl, hut I'm
very excited for it,"
Berlin and Gamer arc two of the
40 players who were picked to
represent their state in the all-star
football game out of the thousands
ivf potential athletes in Louisiana
"It\ a big honor to play with the
best football players in Louisiana
arid Texas. I've watched the game
on TV and always thought it
would be pretty cool to play in,
. said Berlin.
While there wasn't much to do
in the suppressing heat from the
mid day sun. the players spent
their time standing around and
getting to know their newest team-
mates.
"The atmosphere is great. We’re
all starting to get pumped up. It's
like playing on the next level
because of all the talent." said
Berlin.
Berlin is signed to play football
for McNeese State University next
season while Garner is undecided
on where he will play and is think-
ing about playing baseball on the
next level.
"I'm from Lake Charles so
going to McNeese
State keeps me in
my hometown,
said Berlin. "I have
a good chance of
playing there soon.
The Louisiana
squad has three
players who are
committed to play-
ing for MSU next
