REL, BH meet in 19-4A matchup
BY THOMAS COURTNEY

The No. 1 and No. 2
softball teams in District
19-4 A are set to face off
today at Lee High School
at 6:15 p.m.
The Barbers Hill Lady
Eagles and Lee Lady
Ganders will play their
second district match of
the season with a share of
the top spot on the line.
The Lady Eagles got the
best of the Lady Ganders
in game one in a 4-0 deci-
sion on March ,11.
"We had our chances to
score in the first game, but
couldn't get the hits when
we needed them," said Lee
coach Robert Chambliss
"We only got one hit in the
game, but had five or six
base runners, including a
HS SOFTBALL
runner on third base
twice." i
Barbers Hill sports an 8-
0 district ledger and com-
mands the No. | spot in the
District 19-4A standings
while Lee s only loss was
to the Lady Eagles as they
sit in second place with a
6-1 record.
"It should be a heck of a
game We've scouted them
several times trying to fig-
ure them out,” said
Chambliss. “We’re both in
position to Win the district,
but won't be knocked out
of the postseason with a
loss."
The scope of the game
doesn't fall on just the
Lady Ganders.
"The players know it’s a
big game and are excited
about it We have to play
smart ball and be ready for
what happens," said Lady
Eagles' assistant coach
Sharlenc Barnett.
Lee got excellent pitch-
ing from Rachel DeLeon
and Rebecca Hernandez in
the first matchup, but
couldn’t get the runs to
back them up,
Chambliss know s anoth-
er performance like that
won’t cut it this time
around, . ....
"We have to play error-
free ball. It’s going to
come down to who gets the
key hits and commits the
fewest errors." said the
Lee coach. "We committed
crucial errors in the first
game and gave up two
unearned runs.”
The Ganders have been
getting excellent play from

a wide-range of players,
but it's a trio of seniors
who lead the team.
“Hayley Smith, a Ball

baseman, always plays
well. Samantha Gutierrez,
our senior first baseman,
has been hitting really well
and Alex Alvarez, our sen-
ior catcher, has been tear-

Chambliss.

Lee, GCM ready for district showdown
BY THOMAS COURTHEY

It's always good for
Baytown sports when two
GCCTSD school teams are
doing Well, and it increas-
es the excitement w hen the
two meet for a District 19-
4A matchup with the dis-
trict lead on the line
Of course I 'm writing
about the Goose Creek
Memorial vs. Robert E
Lee baseball game set to
take place today at Lee
High School at 6 p.m.
The Patriots have built a
13-game win streak and
own first place in District
19-4A with a 6-0 record
while the Ganders, who
are 5-1 in district play, w ill
look to grab a share of the
top spot w ith a w in. ;
• "This game is good for
Baytown baseball because
both teams involved are
successful.” said Lee
coach David Hackney.
"We could be tied for first
with a win or Goose Creek
could keep control of first
place with a win ”
‘This game is a good
thing for Baytown It says
a lot about baseball in the
city," said Goose Creek
coach Chris Rupp.
The game will feature
each team's ace pitcher as
Chance Czerwonka will
take the mound for the
Patriots while Reed Seeley
will get the call for the
Ganders.
"It’s a unique pitching
matchup and should be fun
to watch." said Hackney.
Goose Creek has seen
Barbers HllI s ace Grayson
Long and Crosby's stand-
out hurler Jeremy
Gabryszwski in their last
two games, both resulting
in Patriot wins.
“Goose Creek had seen
Gabryszwski and Long
last season in district play.
They haven't seen Reed
yet." said Hackney. “First
time through the lineup for
Seeley will be interesting
to watch, but once he gets
settled in he will be fine."
“We will approach
Seeley the same way we
have the last few games
When we face pitchers
with velocity we have to
work on speeding up our
hands and getting our bat
speed up." said Rupp “We
also have to be mentally
prepared and look for
something in the zone to
hit.":
Hackney knows Seeley
will keep the Ganders in
the game and will need the
guys behind him to remain
solid
"We’ve been playing
good defense lately, but we
need our hitting to come
around. That’s what I have
been waiting on." said: the
Gander coach 'We get
hits to- tfiaintam leads and
get w ins, but I'd like to see
our bats gets hotter"
It takes a team effort to
real off 13 wins m a row
and Rupp thinks the whole
Patriot lineup is getting it
done
"It's hard to single out
one or two players w ho arc
doing better than other
players. The whole team
has been very good during
our stretch,, and it seems
someone else is stepping
up every game When we
need a big hit or a good
