HOUSTON After
three games, the Robert
E. Lee Ganders met their
match in Alief Taylor at
the Red Bull Game
Breakers 7-on-7 football
tournament at Taylor
High School on Tuesday
The Ganders fell to
host Taylor in a nail-
biter. 21 -19. in a win-or-
go-home game.
“We did well overall
and had a chance to win.
We've played five games
as a team and I like how
we’re coming along*'.’
said Ganders’ 7-on-7
coach Tim Young.
Lee also plays in a 7-
on-7 league with area
high schools.
The Ganders fell
behind the Lions, 11-3,
before Nate Scott con-
nected with Jamari
Gilbert tor a touchdown
at the end of the first half
to cut the Taylor lead to
11 -10 at halftime
Lee gained a T2-I0
lead out of halftime after
two first downs before a
redzone interception put
the Lions ahead. IT-12,
Taylor took a 20-12
lead on the following
possession after a six-
play touchdown drive.
Lee pulled to within
one. 20-19. after a first-
down point and a 30-yard
touchdown • strike from
Scott to Gilbert.
The Ganders decided to
go for a two-point coii-
version and the win, but
it fell incomplete.
"We got away from the
game plan and tried to
open it up too fast;" said
Young.
Lee opened the tourna-
ment against Madison
High School and both
teams looked a little rusty
to start
The teams battled to a
3-3 tie before two first
downs and a touchdown
put Madison up. II-3. at
halftime.
Josh Zcllars spelled
Scott at quarterback for
Lee to start the second
half and the switch paid
off instantly.
Zellars connected with
Jaevon Richardson on a
10-yard crossing route
before Richardson
showed his speed and
went 35 yards to paydirt
on the first play of the
second half.
After a failed two-point
conversion. Lee trailed
i 1-9.
T hat was as close as the
Ganders would get as
first downs and defensive
stops pushed Madison’s
lead to 16-12 for the win.
"We tried to get too
much at one time,” said
Young. "We need to go to
the short game and pick
up first downs for points
and gain momentum.”
The short game is
exactly what Lee went to
against 1-10 rival
Ghannelview in an elimi-
nation game two.
Zellars started at quar-
terback for the Ganders
and ripped of short-
yardage passes and two
first-down points before
finding Scott on a three-
yard slant for a touch-
down/
Richardson plucked the
ball out of the air on the
ensuing one-point con-
version to gi ve Lee a 9-0
lead.
It was all Lee through
the end of the game as the
Gander defense played
tight to come up with
three interceptions and
countless defensive stops
before a second
Richardson touchdown
and a Darion Landry con-
version gave. Lee a 25-5
win.
“The short game is
exactly what we wanted
to do. It kepi
Ghannelview off the field
and gave us points." said
Young. : .
It was the second year
for the Red Bull Game
Breakers tournament as ti
has increased from six
tour stops in 2010 to 15
in 2011
Houston was the ninth
stop of the tournament
and the third in Texas
after visits to Dallas and
Fort Worth
The top two teams
from the Houston tourna-
ment will play iii the
national ch a nip ions h i ps
at Southern Methodist
University on July 14-15
versus the top teams from
the 14 other cities.
