Continental Singers
auditions to be held
Nov. 20
Vocal and instrumental
auditions for the In
ternationally-known Contine-
ntal Singers and Orchestra will
be held Thursday Nov. 20 from
3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the
sanctuary of First Christian
Church.
Continental Singers are a non-
profit Christian organization.
Auditions are being taken for
the 1976 summer tours with
positions open for male and
female vocalists brass rhythm
and string players.
Persons 16 to 21 are eligible.
Johnny Johnson talent
director will be conducting the
auditions.
"The auditions are simple
and last only a few minutes"
says Johnson. "Vocalists will be
required to sing one gospel solo
of their choice. Instrumentalists
will need to play two selections
of varying tempos."
Persons accepted as Con-
tinentals are required to raise
money totaling approximately
half the actual tour cost. Con-
tinental Singers meet the
remaining expenses through
offerings and record sales while
on the road.

Senate
Senate held a brief but
constructive session last
Tuesday night In the Student
Government offices.
President Jim Thomas
opened the meeting with a
prayer and began business by
hearing Treasurer Melinda
Bynum report of the-week's
expenditures.
Miss Bynum reported that
628.25 had been spent during the
week. Ten dollars were
payment to Sharon Smartt for
her typing names for the
Student Directory 113.02 was
spent for the 8A office
telephone and 62.13 was spent
on charges from the university
bookstore according to Miss
Bynum.
The Senate's balance now
stands at 61.357.36.
Sophomore Senator Becky
Askew chairman of the
Intramural Committee
reported that the face lift for
Sportsman Park was
progressing. Senior Senator
Merry Wade said that Gamma
Beta Phi will definitely help
with the project that calls for
the painting of the benches and
general clean up work on the
intramural field.
Hershel Samples gave the
cheerleader report. Samples
stated that he had looked into
the possibility of taking a bus to
the Aid game in Kingsville but
that 617 per person seemed too
high. He said he had talked to
Dr. Brooks HPU president
holds brief session
Reports heard
about the possibility of getting
some money donated to put the
price per person somewhere
between $5-67. The bus would
leave Saturday morning and
return following the game.
Charles Thrasher Vice
Chairman of the Elections
Committee reported that a run
off was needed in the Junior
Class Favorite race. Sara
flyman and Kim Gumfory will
vie for the honor in a special
election during the class
meetings scheduled for today.
The Student Directory ac-
cording to Bruce Perkins is
progressing. Production costs
will be split between all the
greek letter organisations on
campus.
Thomas reported that he and
Sophomore Class President
Mike Newman has taken up a
collection for Thanksgiving
from the faculty and 626.90 has
been given. Another money
drive will be held soon following
a future chapel. Buckets will be
placed at all doors. The
proceeds will go for the pur-
chase of turkeys for needy
families in the Brownwood
area.
SA Secretary Cherie Walters
has been placed in charge of the
traditional all-university
Christmas party scqeduled for
December 12. She will pick her
own committee at a later date.
One hundred dollars has been
budgeted for the affair.
Randy Skinner reported that
HPU Business Manager Harold
Preston said that funds were
extremely low and the chance
for black topping and repairing
parking areas in the near future
were slim. Preston did say
though that future funds would
be used to repair the haiardous
parking lots.
In new business Freshman
President OUln Collins brought
a grievance from Taylor Dorm.
Residents of the athlete's dorm
resent the fact that all the other
dorms on campus have ballot
boxes in their lobbies with the
exception of Taylor. Their
ballot box is located in Jen-
nings. Senior Senator Randy
Clinkscales moved that it be
studied by the Election Revision
Committee.
In final business Freshman
Senator Steve Jones brought
another grievance to the at-
tention of Senate. Sid Richard-
son residents are seeking
transportation from the
Academy to the dormitory
located blocks away from the
main campus. Dean Myre
stated that a similar shuttle
route was in effect several
years ago but that it faded out
due to lack of riders. As the
route stands now Sid
Richardson residents must
walk from the main campus to
the dorm and then return later
that morning or afternoon for
another class. Thomas in-
structed Jones to take this to the
Sid Richardson Dorm Council.
Cheerleaders
to sponsor slave sale
next Friday
Head cheerleader Hershel
Samples reported that the
cheerleaders will hold a slave
sale next Friday in chapel.
Samples commented that he
hoped to get some top per-
sonalities on campus to take
part including SA President Jim
Thomas and Sid Rich Dorm
Director Eddie Tubbs.
Samples encouraged
everybody to begin saving their
nickels and dimes to participate
in the sale.
Auditions
for Bicentennial
opora
underway
If you're fond of cowboy
boots ten-gallon hats and
spittin' and you can't wait until
Western Days pardnuh here la
some good news!
Casting is now in session for
the Howard Payne Bicentennial
opera "Girl of the Golden
West" by Puccini.
The big three-day shootout is
scheduled for April in the
Brownwood Coliseum but you
can start practicing your draw
now by contacting Dr. Moselle
Sherman at ext. 235 or 6464676
if you are interested in any
phase of this action-packed
production.
There will be no formal
auditions so if 'n you are one of
them singing cowboys or
cowgirls you are eligible to fill
one of the 21 solo roles or one of
the 30 chorus positions Come on
over there's plenty of room.
The general public from
surrounding communities and
Brownwood is also eligible by
enrolling for opera through the
university's extension program.
First Church
of Kingsville to
sponsor fellowship
A "Chips and Dips and
Fellowship" will be held for all
present and past Howard Payne
University students and faculty
from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday Nov.
15 at First Baptist Church
Fellowship Hall West King and
3rd Streets Kingsville.
James B. Franklin pastor
has encouraged all those
associated with the university
to be guests at his church before
the HPU Yellow Jacket football
game against Texas A&I.
