Alone with God
"Commit vour way to the
Lord; trust in him and he will
act. He will bring forth your
vindication as the light and
your right as the noonday."
(Psalm 37:54 RSV)
These verses have much to
say to us about the nature of our
relationship to God. The trust
which is paramount in our
acceptance of His Lordship in
our lives is stressed in the idea
of willfully committing oneself
to Him. This commitment is an
individual's acknowledgement
of his own need for God to make
order out of the otherwise
meaninglessness of his life.
Only God's Spirit can produce
such an attitude within us for it
is the attitude of Christ not of
man. Perhaps the Psalmist
recognized how totally we must
depend upon God so that it led
him to write that when we trust
God then He takes the
responsibility for the action.
The Christian has many
responsibilities for action in his
Journey toward Chriitlikens;
he has many opportunities to
use his physical and mental
resources to benefit himself and
others; but never must a
Christian become so involved in
doing which is vitally im-
portant that he forgets from
Whom his strength comes. Only
God working in and through a
Christian life produces truly
fruitful works.

Perspective
Lottors
I would like to express my
appreciation for the manner in
which the students made
homecoming weekend an en-
joyable time for all who came to
visit Howard Payne University
campus.
Beginning with the parade
with the floats portraying our
national heritage in original and
pertinent themes and then
the refreshing and clever
performances in the program
"Salute to America."
The ballgame and halftime
activities helped finish a
delightful day. The only regret
was that the band was unable to
perform in full uniform.
Then on Sunday the manner
in which we were welcomed by
the students at open house was a
reflection of the warm and
friendly atmosphere at your
school.
It was evident that much time
and thought went into
preparation for the activities.
Thanks to all who par-
ticipated in making the
weekend a happy time for all.
Sincerely
Mrs. Frances McLarry

Dear Sir:
Saturday evening Nov. 8
1875 I attended the HPU-
Southwest Texas State football
game. During the course of that
game I observed what I
believed was an improper call
by one of the officials. I im-
mediately proceeded to berate
that hapless individual with
loud vocal noises which would
have been more appropriate of
a drunken baseball fan at the
old Brooklyn Dodger's stadium
inN.Y.
However I have since had
thoughts as to whether this Und
of conduct should be considered
appropriate at a HPU athletic
contest What I am trying to say
is that I am very ashamed of my
actions last Saturday evening
and also for the many times in
the past when I believe that my
actions have not been of the
type to bring credit to an in
stitution which I dearly love.
Therefore I am asking
forgiveness of my fellow
students as well as the ad-
ministration of this institution.
Also I request your prayers that
I will be able to control myself
at future events where I may be
present.
Let's back our Jackets in a
Christian manner. As far as the
officials are concerned I will try
to realize that there was only
one person on this earth who
was perfect. HE practiced Love
and Forgiveness.
Yours in Christian Love
George C. Stout Jr.

Applications for BEOG
to be ready soon
The Student Aid Office has
been advised that applications
for the Basic Educational
Opportunity Grant may be
available shortly after January
1 1176. Howard Payne
University students who are
returning for the 1176-77 school
year are encouraged to apply
for the Basic Grants Program.
Students who were ineligible
for Basic Grants this year (1171-
71) are also encouraged to apply
since program provisions
change thus making more
students eligible. A good
example is the forthcoming
change regarding a student's
initial entry into poftaecondary
education. Before this year
students who entered a college
or university prior to April 1
1973 were automatically
ineligible to apply for a Basic
Grant. It appears that that
provision will be deleted thus
allowing more students to apply
and perhaps qualify for the
program.
