REL
boys
out of
playoffs
BY THOMAS COURTNEY
ttKXTias.courtney@baytownsun.com
Two goals in the final
12 minutes pushed Spring
Woods past the Lee boys’
soccer team on Friday
and denied the Ganders
their first playoff win.
Lee held a 1-0 lead
until the Tigers scored in
the 68th and 76th minutes
to claim the 2-1 bi-district
win.
After not winning a
game last season, the
Ganders finished the sea-
son as District 41-4A
champions with a 13-5-2
(7-1-2) record.
“There’s not a lot you
say to the kids after a loss
like that. I think once they
have a chance to step
back and relax, they'll
realize what they have
accomplished this sea-
son," said Langlois.
The Ganders didn’t
waste much time taking a
lead as J.J. Mata kicked a
perfectly aimed pass to a
streaking Eddie JaimeZ
who finished with a strike
to the right side of the net
to give Lee a 1-0 lead six
minutes into the match.
Kareem Diamond had a
chance to put Lee up 2-0
10 minutes later, but a
point-blank shot attempt
was covered by the Tiger
goalie.
After playing most of
the first 20 minutes on the
Lee side of the field, the
Ganders began to take
control of the match and
attack the Spring Woods
goal.
But the speedy Tiger
defenders managed to
snuff out the Lee attacks
and keep the match close.
Lee continued to con-
trol the match after half-
time, but couldn’t find a
way to get past the Tiger
goalie.
“We had chances after
halftime to get a second
goal, but couldn’t put it in
the net,” said Langlois,
After 68 minutes of
missed shot attempts and
close calls, the Tigers
finally equalized when a
Spring Woods forward
bounced a ball over the
Lee goalie and into the
net to knot the game at
one-all.
“The game really
opened up when they tied
us. The home crowd
injected a lot of energy
into the game and both
teams started playing
harder," said Langlois.
It wasn't tong before
the Tigers gained the
lead.
Just nine minutes after
tying the match. Spring
Woods was again on the
attack when they stormed
past the Lee defenders
and stuck the game-win-
ner in the right side of the
goal to take a 2-1 lead.
The Ganders attempted
