The Baytown Sun
Bluetooth headset a
convenient addition
In an effort to take nty
technical nerdiness per-
sona to the next level, I
went out and bought a
bluetooth earpiece for my
smartphone (Droid X by
Motorola). I've always
considered bluetooth to be
barely useful, but now I'm
going to call it a full “con-
venient"
technolo-
gy. Also,
I learned
a couple
things
too!
F or
those
mm j
BARBEE know.
blue-
tooth is a
short-range signal that's
designed for connecting
device? wirelessly to each
other. While the wireless
range for bluetooth can be
increased with special cir-
cumstances and equip-
ment, typically it’s good
for about 50 feet. This
, makes it perfect for things
like wireless keyboards,
mice, headsets, and even
using your vehicle to inter-
act with your phone. MP3
player, etc.
From the glory days of
yesteryear, we would teth-
er our ears down to our
"listening device" via wire.
That wire would often get
in the way. and the result
would be cither the ear
buds getting yanked out of
our ear periodically or
wreak general havoc with
our body's movement. As
a result, one of the more
recent applications for
bluetooth is to use ear-
pieces. headsets, and even
your car’s speakers to
answer calls and listen to
music from your "device”
wirelessly!
Most probably have seen
those people with ear-
pieces hanging off the side
of their head that looks like
Uhuru’s device from Star
Trek (those guys inspired
yet ANOTHER technolo-
gy). Yep, that’s a bluetooth
wireless earpiece that's
connected to their cell
phone in their pocket or on
a belt clip on their hip.
There’s a. teeny tiny micro-
phone in that earpiece too,
in which they can be heard
through it as well. So, now-
people can hold conversa-
tions without having tp
clutch their phone. Some
vehicles will let you use
the speaker system to hear
phone calls and there
should be a little micro-
phone somewhere so the
person can hear you.
The important thing to
remember is not all wire-
less headsets will do all
functions you may want;
my first one I assumed
(yeah. I know) that it
would. Mostly, the ear-
pieces will start out at
about S20 and will just
answer calls but not let you
listen tp media. There are
some wrap-around head-
sets that kart/out about $50
w ill let you listen to media,
answer calls, and talk.
Bluetooth devices must
be "paired" with the host
device they're connecting
with. There’s a set proce-
dure for each device and
it's just best to look at the
manual to do so. Usually
the bluetooth device needs
to be put in “pairing mode"
and then you scan for all
bluetooth devices on the
hosting, device. Once
they’re paired they will
communicate and you'll be
able to enjoy hands-free!
You'll need to check vour
vanity at the door, though.

ETON (AP)
U S. companies have added
jobs for 12 straight months,
but the gains across the
country have been uneven
and a little surprising.
California and Michigan,
which each suffered some
of the w orst |ob losses dur-
ing the recession, are
adding jobs again.
California last month had
its single best month for
job creation in more than
two decades. Still, six
states lost jobs .from
February 2010 through last
month.
Nationwide, employers
have added 1.3 million jobs
from February 2010
through last month.
California, which was
still losing jobs as recently
as September, has added
nearly 200.000 jobs. That's
second only to Texas,
which added 254,200 net
jobs.
