Thirty Howard Payne band
members traveled to Boulder
Colo. on August IS to survey the
Drum and Bugle Corp Inter-
national competition.
Forty-four corps competed in
a series of preliminaries on
August 1748 and thirteen corps
went on to final competition
Denver on the 19th. Thirty-two
thousand people attended
finals.
The formal DCI competition
began in 1972 at Whitewater
Wise. Since then Cornell
University in Ethica New
York and the University of
Philadelphia at Franklin Field
have each hosted the event for
two consecutive years. DCI
consists of Junior Corps whose
members are between the ages
rtl
of 12-21. The corps are private
non-profit organizations.
Half-time shows on televised
national football games have in
the past lost their audiences to
other programs because of the
lack of entertainment in their
shows. Based on this fact the
Drum and Bugle corps strive to
entertain their audiences with
new and innovative music style
of marching and visual effects
obtained by flag and rifle corps.
"We have attended DCI
competitions since 1972 in order
to learn and incorporate their
ideas into our program at
Howard Payne" commented
Mr. Chuck Christian director of
bands. The Swingln'Stinger
band was the first university
band in Texas to use the drum
corp style on the field ac
cording to Mr. Christian. East
Texas State University followed
their example and Lake
Highlands High School in Dallas
began to use this style last year.
Howard Payne was also the
first to use routine flags in
audio-visual coordination with
music. Flag captain for the 1977
corp is Calvin Tyner and Kathy
Bishop in flag lieutenant. The
corp has 14 members. A rifle
corp has also been incorporated
into the half-time show.
Mr. Hayes Beam ex-Howard
Payne student and band
member is the new percussion
instructor for the band. Mr.
Beam feels that this year's
percussion section is the finest
he's heard at Howard Payne in
several years.
