at Howard Payne

Garcia
Coming to Howard Payne
says Ramon Garcia new
assistant dean of student is
"like coming home."
Garcia is a 1974 graduate of
Howard Payne which he thinks
will make his job easier.
Knowing many of the ad-
ministration and being familiar
with the traditions will make It
easier to build relationships he
says.
After receiving his masters of
religious education degree from
Golden Gate Baptist
Theological Seminary Garcia
was a dorm director at
California Baptist College for
two years.
Garcia will be replacing
Leigh Stllwell.
Goodyear
"People here are much more
sincere and friendly than at
state schools" says Dr. Burt
Goodyear.
Dr. Goodyear is a new ad-
dition to the faculty this
semester and will be teaching in
the speech department.
Dr. Goodyear received his
bachelor's and master's
degrees from Texas Tech
University and his doctorate
from the University of Texas.
He has taught at the Florida
State University and most
recently at James Madison in
Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
Ecker
"I'm very impressed with the
helpfulness and friendliness of
both the faculty and the stud-
ent body" said Dr. John Ecker
a new faculty member. Dr.
Ecker teaches elementary
school science elementary
school math' and human
growth and development.
BSU lake retreat
begins this evening
The BSU Fall Retreat is
scheduled for Sept. 8-9 at the
Heart of Texas Baptist en-
campment. Dr. James Shields
of the HPU's Institute of
Christianity will lead In Bible
study Friday night and Bruce
Peterson director of religious
activities will lead it Saturday
morning.
He chose to come to HP
because he "wanted to teach
school in a Christian at-
mosphere." Dr. Ecker received his B.A.
degree from the New York
State University and his M.A.
and his Ph.D from Baylor
University.
He worked for two years in
New York teaching fifth and
sixth grades and he also
worked as a teaching fellow in
Baylor for three years.
Romig
"I feel the students here are
very bright and alert and very
friendly" says Dr. Evelyn
Romig a new professor in the
English department.
Dr. Romig came to Howard
Payne because Brownwood is
her husband's hometown and
says she's glad they chose to
come here. "I'm very pleased
with the student body and would
like to become involved with
campus activities" she said.
Dr. Romig received her
bachelor's degree from Rice
University her master's degree
from Texas A&M and her Ph.D.
from Rice University.
Before coming to Howard
Payne she taught at Texas
A&M.
Helder
"Music is my life my
vocatio n and my avocation"
says Dr. James Helder a new
faculty member in the music
department. "Students here are
more mannerly and fairly well
disciplined" he commented.
Dr. Helder has taught music
in colleges and universities all
over the United States including
Syracuse University Antelope
Valley College Pasadena
College University of Southern
California and Los Angeles
Mission College.
Dr. Helder was also a free-
lance side man in pop and
commercial music and is a
concert saxaphonist.
Dove Song will provide en-
tertainment. Recreation will
Include skiing water sport3
volleyball baseball softball
basketball and a trlsbee-golf
tournament.
Cost Is $10 for the full
weekend and $5 for one day. All
students are Invited.

Social Science
Honors Minor
now available
in Academy
A "Social Science Honors
Minor" is a new minor
available to students on campus
through the Academy of
Freedom according to Dr.
Roger L. Brooks HP president.
The Academy of Freedom has
restructured its in
terdisciplinary program to
attract majors In any field who
carry an honors grade-point
average. The revision Is In
support of Dr. Brooks' goal to
increase the scholarship quality
and reputation of the Howard
Payne student body.
The program is intended to
recognize "A" and "B"
students who make a com-
mitment as they enter the
program to maintain a 3.0 or
al greer

higher grade point average in
both their major and minor
studies for their last two years
of college. Minor members will
receive an Academy certificate
at the successful conclusion of
the junior year.
The minor offers a variety of
courses including ethics in-
ternational politics and the
American free enterprise
system.
This program gives a student
the opportunity to expand his
whole being without being
limited to a single degree plan.
The program is effective with
the fall 1978 term. Further in-
formation and advisement can
be obtained in the student
assistants' office in the
Academy of Freedom.

Howard Payne University
will offer a six-week continuing
education course during the fall
semester on Investing the stock
market according to Dr. Joe
Timmons director.
The course which will meet
weekly beginning Sept. 14 will
cover such areas as growth
stocks charting tax shelters
options and federal economic
policy.
Instructor for the course will
be Merrill Lynch Account
Executive Don Reynolds a
former economic planning
consultant and university
lecturer. He is an accomplished
public speaker with over 30
television and radio ap-
pearances to his credit.
Fee for the course will be $30.
