Defense stops ACU cold

Whiit can be next for the HPU Yellow
Jacket ba.sketball ilefeii.se" Can they hold an
USC opponent to no points for the entire
second half After holding Stephen F. Austin
to 22 points in the second half last Monday
night the Jackets turn1 a spectacular lesson
in defense to the Abilene Christian Wildcats in
Brownwood Coliseum Saturday night by
allowing thorn onlj 11 second-half points in
beating them soundl (14-40.
The turning point in the name came when
Coach Bob Derryberry received a technical
four for sei earning at the referee with 2:37 left
in the first half However the technical
served to ignite the partisan Yellow Jacket
crowd and Kandall Moore an ill percent
free-throw shooter missed both of the
technical shots and ACU didn't score on the
ensuing possession. The Jackets were in
complete con'rol for the rest of the name.
The Jackets were leading 33-32 at this point
and then built up a 38-34 halftime lead.
The second half proved to be the back-
breaker for ACU as the Jackets got very
aggressive in tnejr man-to-man defense. ACU
was unable to get any open shots because of
"pressure on the wing where they couldn't get
a direct pass" explained Derryberry. "We
fronted a little more instead of trailing the
Buy."
Derryberry after 1 OOth win
Wildcat coach Willard Tate said his team
" ran out of gas" in the second half.
The Jackets opened up a 10-point lead at 55-
45 with 8:11 left in the game and then built
that up on a four corners offense that allowed
Gary Hopkins two lay-ups Bonnie Phenix a
short field goal and the final shot with two
seconds loft in the game a Pete Patterson
dunk to add the final insult to the second half
massacre. ACU didn't score a point in the last
eight minutes.
dreg Bonner was again the leading scorer
for the Jacket with 18 points 16 in the first
half. Gar Hopkins added 15 and Pete Pat-
terson 12 and eight rebounds Marshall Davis
also had eight rebounds to lead the Jackets
defensively
The Jackets set another Brownwood
Coliseum record the fewest points ever
allowed an IC opponent in the Coliseum -45.
The previous record was 46. set last year
against Stephen F. Austin.
The fifth-ranked defense in the NAIA also
held ACU to 42.8 percent from the field only
one player Jim Lynch to get into double
figures at 10 ACU only pulled down 35
rebounds compared to the Jackets' 42.
Now the Jackets must shoot for anything
less than 45 in the Coliseum to set another
record. But it is very possible because the
defense seems to be quite a record-breaker.
Coach Bob Derry berry will
have an opportunity to mark
another milestone in his
illustrious career tomorrow
night when his Howard Payne
University Yellow Jackets host
Lone Star Conference rival
Angelo State University in the
Brownwood Coliseum.
Derryberry who is in his fifth
year as head Yellow Jacket
tutor will be seeking his 100th
Nix Picks
victory at Howard Payne.
Derryberry who came tc
HPU from Cisco Junior College
as an assistant coach and who
holds his degrees from Pan
American and East Texas
State racked up his 99th victory
against the Rams at San
Angelo.
He has lost but 40 games for a
percentage reading of .712.

HP to win two more

For the eieht eames I Dlcked Houston lexas
last week I was 100 percent
correct. I believe I like this
basketball predicting better
than football.
It may Just be that the Lone
Star Conference is very
predictable. Howard Payne
East Texas and Southwest
Texas will win plus one other
middle team and either Sam
A&l Angelo
State ACU or Stephen F. Austin
will lose.
The games this week should
be predictable but watch out
for next week when Southwest
Texas East Texas and HP
collide.
I will take any guest
predicters who want to come by
before 4 Monday afternoons.
Next week's
intromurals
Next week's intramural
games are listed below. No
games will be played Monday
night so that students may at-
tend the HPU-Abilene Christian
University game in Abilene.
