Jackets set out to break losing streak
The Howard Payne
Yellow Jackets will seek a
breather from seven
straight Lone Star Con-
ference losses as they face
Angelo State Abilene
Christian and East Texas
State this week in three
home conference games.
The Yellow Jackets have
had a coaching change and
a lot of injuries since con-
ference play started more
than two weeks ago. The
latest casualty is
sophomore center David
Stearns who sprained an
ankle against Abilene
Christian Saturday and did
not play Monday night in
an 83-47 loss to the Rams.
Danny Berryman has miss-
ed four of seven conference
games and is nowhere near
100 percent after spraining
his right wrist Jan. 12
against Texas Lutheran.
HPU has managed to put
some good halves on the
books but has not been
able to string two of those
together for a win. The
Jackets outscored East
Texas State University by
10 in the second half last
week but still lost by 19;
and then they were ahead
of ACU 31-26 at halftime
but ended up losing 72-55.
HPU coach John Sheehy
is hoping to pick up his first
win against Tarleton but if
the script goes true to form
nothing will be easy for the
young Yellow Jackets who
have -only one senior and
two sophomores on their
freshman-dominated
roster.
After Tarleton the
Jackets have three con-
ference games at home to
end a six-game road swing
that has so far been
disastrous. HPU will host
Angelo State at 8 p.m.
tomorrow then face
Abilene Christian at 8 p.m.
on Monday and East
Texas State will come to
town on Thursday.
HP women In tie for LSC lead
Senior Marty Akins still
leads HPU in scoring and
in rebounding. Although he
had a disastrous night
against Angelo State Mon-
day scoring only eight
points and picking one re-
bound he still ranked se-
cond in the conference in
rebounding averaging 8.4
per contest.
Freshman Barry Kim-
ball is still second in free
throw shooting at 87 per-
cent having missed only
one charity toss in LSC
play. Guards Dennis
Williams and Berryman
are second and third in
assists in the conference.
Coach Sheehy and his
troops hope a little of that
coliseum magic will rub off
over the weekend and the
Jackets can pull some
upsets. HPU over the years
has won more than 85 per-
cent of its games in the pit.
Howard Payne's
women's basketball team
defeated Angelo State
University on the road 84-74
Monday night and then
found themselves back in a
tie for first place in the
Lone Star Conference after
Southwest Texas State
University lost to Sam
Houston State University
67-55 and after Abilene
Christian University
routed East Texas State
University. HPU SWTSU
and ACU now have 4-2 con-
ference marks.
HPU will host Angelo
State again as the second
half of the LSC race starts
on Saturday. The Lady
Jackets will then play four
of their last six games in
the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Jackets played
one of their best games of
the season against ASU
shooting 52 percent from
the field and pulling away
early in the second half.
HPU will host ASU
tomorrow at 6 p.m. and
then will face a rematch
with Abilene Christian
Monday. The Lady Jackets
will be seeking revenge for
a 63-61 loss at Abilene last
Saturday.

"I think we are in the
driver's seat with four of
our last six conference
games at home' said
Campbell.
HPU's other game dur-
ing the homestand is
Thursday when East Texas
State visits HPU.
