Senate discusses plans for
Centennial Homecoming
Homecoming prcpara -tions
once again topped the
agenda in Senate on Monday
October 9. Also brought up
was an explanation for the
missing Douglas MacArthur
statue at the Academy of
Freedom.
The statue fell sometime
between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m.
Sunday. According to Dr.
Mangrum Senate sponsor
and director of the Academy
the bolts holding MacArthur
had worn down to pencil size
and could no longer hold the
500 lb. statue in place. The
fall resulted in a broken arm
and chipped pedestal which
will hopefully be repaired in
time for Homecoming.
"I just wanted to correct
all rumors" Mangrum
stated. "The statue has not
been vandalized and the arm
and statue are not at
Tarlcton" he said.
Other business discussed
was the upcoming
Homecoming activities.
Senate members signed up to
help with registration and
ticket sales under the tent
which will be set up on the
quad between Winebrcnner
and the Yellow Jacket gym
this year.
Homecoming convoca-
tion was also brought up and
Beth Davis committee
chairman said the theme
would be represented in black
learning styles. There arc
also people available to help
students with reading
comprehension and skills.
Career testing is available
to help students discover a
job field. Students take a
three part test which includes
interest personality and
aptitude. ACT GRE and
CLEP tests arc all on hand
for anyone who needs to lake
one of these tests.
Two different support
groups will be underway
soon one for those with
eating disorders and another
for those who have been
and white. This convocation
will take place on Friday
October 20 at 10:00 a.m.
instead of Wednesday
October 18. It will count as
a mandatory chapel and was
set up to allow alumni the
opportunity to attend.
Also discussed was
funding for the Centennial
Homecoming Committee
headed by Henry Brown
junior class senator. An
extra allotment of
approximately $200 was
established in case of an
emergency providing the
committee with $1200 for
all Homecoming activities.
This money will be used for
convocation the bonfire
Queens' carriage rental the
parade and freshmen drums.
Unused funds will go back to
the Senate account
As Julie Newbury
sophomore class president
stated in defense of the
additional funds "None of us
are going to be around for
the next 100th celebration
and this is a really big deal."
Rounding out the
meeting were class reports
and Missy Burns junior
class president reported that
the class would be selecting
the person who would take
Mrs. Ann Harris' place for a
day. The winner Craig
Henderson was chosen in
chapel on Wednesday.
emotionally or sexually
abused. Bickncll head of the
counseling center said that
these types of support
groups arc usually very
helpful and highly effective.
The counseling center
staff includes Pal
Bickncll who has several
years of experience with
univcrstity counseling; Scott
Floyd who is working on
his doctorate from the
seminary and has had
clinical practice in
counseling; Marilynn

teaching career; and Lillian
