Homecoming:
the longest
week of our lives
Christine Deadman
Homecoming ... a lime to
relurn to Howard Payne and hail the
gold and blue? For alumni maybe
but for the rest of us it is a time to pull
our hair out. bang our head against a
wall and live seven days without sleep.
Oh gee! Could it be that
Homecoming is here again? If so
now is the time dear friends to pray
for your mental wcllbcing. Wcarcall
about to encounter the longest week
of our lives. You will be working on
at least three or four floats
simultaneously because
E ERYONE builds a float (rumor
hast it that my Intro to Business class
is building a 13 foot replica of the
Wall Street Journal!)
You will probably be marching
with the band AND singing with the
choir. Thismeanshavingtoremember
when to wear a uniform or a tuxedo
(IF you actually remembered to bring
your tux from home).
There will be 500.000 brunches
breakfasts bar mitzvahs etc. and you
arc expected to attend at least half of
them (and host the other half).
You will all have to attend every
performance of the musical whether
singing playing ushering or
watching someone you know. Finally
squished somewhere in the middle is
the football game. FUN?
Well if you are not marching
singing cheering or or on the
Homecoming Court (trying to keep
your hat on your head) you must
smile while meeting everyone that
EVER went to school with your
parents (Oops! Your parents are in
town!) There is no way to prepare
now because you WILL have a major
exam in every class thisweek. Besides
that is called "planning ahead" and
we do not do that here. Oh the
splendcr of knowing that one day
soon we will be alumni pampered for
an entire weekend each year.
But let us not look to tomorrow
for we must grit our teeth and pursue
the task at hand. We must unite as a
student body to conquer the enemy !
! WE WILL SURVIVE Homecoming
'93 . . .just pray that the scars are
minimal.

Although mostly thought of as
an eating disorder affecting young
women bulimia is found in young
men also. The most recent stats show
that 15-20 percent of all women
ages 18 -25 have the disorder. The
percentage is much lower in
adolescent and youn adult males.
An eating disorder is a
psychological disorder manifested
by the unhealthy use of food or lack
of food used to satisfy a
psychological need. Bulimia is an
eating dis-ordcr that consists of
hinging and purging. Binging is
eating large amounts of high caloric
food over a short period of time
triggered not by hunger but by an
emotional upset. Guilt then follows.
Purging enables the victim to rid
themselves of the food and the guilt
they feel after binging. This may
occur by self induced vomiting
abuse of laxitives and or abuse of
diuretics (water pills).
Unlike the anorexic who is
extremely thin the bulimic is usually
normal in weight which can make
detection of such bodily abuse
difficult for the onlooker to identify.
Socially victims tend to be high
achievers with obsessive personality
traits angry moody and a
perfectionist in their performance.
They usually lack a sense of identity
causing an abnormal need to feel
special. Bulimicsrealizethcirbingc
purge behavior is not normal.
Physical characteristics
include fluctuations in weight
(looking thin one month and heavy
the next) tooth decay or gum disease
frequent complaints of a sore throat
skin rashes dry skin broken blood
vessels on cheeks swollen salivary
glands pufflncss around the eyes
ankles and feet. The victim may also
be noted eating in secrecy and going
to the bathroom frequently
especially after eating.

The consequences of binging
and purging over a period of time
(which is very individualized) arc
astounding in the cmotiona sense as
well as the physical sense. This not
only affects the bulimic but also
the family and friends of the
bulimiic. Medical complications
such as stomach cramps ulcers
colitis internal bleeding rupture of
the stomach or esophagus fluid and
electrolyte imbalance irregular
heart beats heart failure kidney
failure and even death can and docs
occur.
The importance of
psychological counseling before
medical problems occur cannot be
over stressed. Help is available
tlirough personal family or group
counseling. Support groups arc also
available both locally and
nationally. They are listed below. If
you arc not sure what type of
counseling you may need the
