As a follow up on last week's
article "Repelling fun but
Dangerous" I would like to tell you
about my repelling experience.
It started when I was assigned
the story on the latest craze and
pastime of many students at Howard
Payne. I was told I should go with the
guys to get a feel of what they were
doing to sec their reaction as they
repelled and to get quotes from them.
Needless to say when my roommate
and I drove over the rickety suspension
bridge we couldn't believe they
actually entrusted their bodies to this
thing. I had absolutely no intentions
of repelling from the bridge but Tim
David Jase and Kip proved to be
pretty convincing.
In fact they were so convincing
they actually persuaded me and my
roommate Bonnie Benctt (who says
she is probably the biggest chicken on
campus) to repel.
Soon I had the gear and proper
equipment on and was being talked
over the edge of the bridge. I had
repelled once before but it was from
a bridge in Fort Worth at a park. Big
difference. Now there was a river
below me with big snakes swimming
in it. Not too appealing.
For a few minutes I just stood
there and held on to the bridge. It was
so hot and the wind kept blowing my
hairintomymouthandface.Icouldn't
brush it away because that would've
involved using my hands which were
firmly grasped onto the rail of the
bridge. I was worried I was going to
lose my grip and just fall off.
Anyway I did it and it really
wasn't bad at all. I was surprised. In
fact I did it twice.
Of course I did it the easy way
and went down slowly making sure I
could trust the person holding the
rope at the bottom of the bridge. There
was absolutely no way I would ever
just jump from the bridge and free
fall like the guys were doing. Just
watching them and hearing them
scream as they swung down was quite
enough for Bonnie and I.
I think the worst part was once
your done you have to hike back up
to the top of the bridge. For me that
was exhausting because you were so
hyped up about the repel down that
once you're down you can't wait to
get back up. So I hiked back to the
top feeling accomplished.
APARTMENTS
from page 1
Housing has the greatest lag time
when a community begins growing."
Donaldson said during
Brownwood'spcriodof slow growth
the housing market fell into a slump.
Owners sold their property cheap
becauscthcvalucdeprcciatcd. Buyers
bought housingpropcrty cheap which
enabled them to rent the property at a
low rate because the overhead was
low. Brownwood's economy is
growing but the rental prices arc still
set at a lower cost for a stagnant
economy.
Investors arc intimidated by the
low prices because investors would
have to charge more to cover the cost
of their overhead according to
Donaldson.
"Current apartment rates are not
high enough to build new ones"
Donaldson said. "We need to raise
rates which is the only way to raise
enough money to build. Presently
even apartments at a highercost would
fill up but if the economy fell into a
slump the investors could lose renters
and go bankrupt."
Donaldson said Brownwood
would have to prove itself to investors
by showing a continuous growth over
a length of time.
"We need three to five good
years to show sustained growth to get
financing" Donaldson said.
The Brownwood Econom ic and
Development Department said that
several investors have shown interest
in building apartments but nothing
definite has been said yet.
Donaldson added that his best
advice for students is to go ahead and
sign a waiting list and wait.
Dot Johnson assistant manager
for the Wayside Apartments said that

she averages about seven people per
list according to the type of apartment
desired. To rent an apartment for the
spring semester at Wayside Johnson
suggested signing a waiting list in
December.
"It is possible to get an
apartment but I am not expecting any
vacancies" Johnson said.
The manager for the Rainforest
Apartments docs not even keep a
waiting list anymore. The manager
docs not have any vacancies and if
she did. she could fill that spot the
very same day.
Southsidc Village Apartments
has three vacancies but there is a
waiting list to get those apartments
according to manager Diane Mahon.
"I can't guarantee anything"
Mahon said. "We can keep a person
on a waiting list for 60 days. So
come in 60 days before the date you
would like to rent."
Senior Dcanna Gilbert
suggested looking for apartments
renovated from extra space in
businesses and homes. Senior Deanna
Gilbert moved into an apartment
located on the second floor of her
employer's house.
"Many people check into the
apartments they hear about" Gilbert
said. "You need to look in the phone
book and check into all the apartments.
Several businesses offer apartments
on their top floors and several homes
have garage apartments."
Gilbert said she spent several
weeks agonizing over the classified
and the yellow pages looking for a
place to stay before she found her
current apartment.
"Always put your name on the
waiting list even if you don't want the
apartment because then you have an
option if nothing else fall through"
Gilbert said.
