Dr. Harvey: adds a dash of humor to ordinary education
JOHN NORWOOD
Yellow Jacket Staff Writer
"Humor is a very impor-
tant part of life" explained Dr.
Ra Harvey psychology depart-
ment head at Howard Payne
University. "It is important for
students and teachers alike; it
makes our surroundings more
comfortable."
Dr. Harvey does not run
short on humor and students at-
tending his classes can attest to
that.
It is also the theme of the
two books he is currently writ-
ing. APanidj22LilNojJwiiDoc2
tors outlines the purposes that
humor serves in everyday life
and Dead Week is a mystery
novel set on a college campus.
Dr. Harvey's writing stems
from his love of literature.
"I love to read novels" Dr.
Harvey elaborated. "I've always
got one going and sometimes I'll
have two or three going at the
same time."
Spare time is usually con-
sumed by Dr. Harvey's hobby of
reading but he also enjoys ten-
nis and loves to travel especially
to coastal areas.
"I love going to the
beach" he explained and added
"I'd be a beach bum if it paid
better and if it didn't interfere
with my teaching."
Dr. Harvey has been teach-
ing at Howard Payne since 1 991
when he took the position as
head of the department.
"I love teaching but I'm
glad the school year is almost
over" he said. "Then I'll be able
to deal with some problems at
home."

One of the problems Dr.
Harvey mentioned stemmed
from an evening when his house
was flooded after he left the
washing machine on too long.
He awoke and stepped into a
lake of ankle deep water and the
insurance company has given
him the run-around ever since.
A measure of joy brought
on by the birth of his first grand-
daughter several months ago and
the upcoming birth of his sec-
ond has balanced out the stress
Dr. Harvey has dealt with be-
cause of the insurance company.
It requires a sense of hu-
mor to remain sane through the
mix of trials and joys that Dr.
Harvey goes through. One can
laugh or cry about this. Dr.
Harvey chooses to laugh.
As Dr. Harvey recently
told his students "Variety is the
spice of life but too much can
give you indigestion."

ing from prehistory to the 20th cen-

art department trip to the Dallas

hibit will be on display in the Mabee

tration Building May 11-15.

plying for a 1998-99 art scholarship
