Jackets gear up for promising
season in ASC conference
unnjH
RUSS GOODALL
SPECIAL TO THE YJ
It's August and that means
football season is here. The Ameri-
can Southwest Conference race is
about to heat up. The Howard
Payne Yellow Jackets should be
right in the thick of the conference
race this year.
HPU reported to campus on
August 15 to begin two-a-days in
preparation for the upcoming 1998
season. The Yellow Jackets arc
coming off a season that once
seemed very promising but became
a season of lofty expectations and
then idleness at playoff time after
going 7-3.
Vance Gibson opens his sev-
enth season at the controls of the
Yellow Jackets with a nice .655
winning percentage. Gibson would
like to build on last year's second
place finish in the ASC.
'"If wc make sure that we
have the maximum effort and arc
relaxed and having fun it will be a
successful year" said Gibson.
The Jackets will again pos
sess tremendous speed on offense
Running back Damion Vallcry re-
turns along with all-purpose back
Cliff Hall to anchor the Jacket rush-
ing attack.
Along side of Vallcry and
Hall at the fullback position is
ASC Newcomer of the Year Rich-
ard Green. Vallery and Hall com-
bined for 1247 yards rushing and
Hall led the team with 800 all pur-
pose yards. Hall has rushed for
2500 yards and scored 25 touch-
down in his HPU career.
Led by all-conference selec-
tion Clint Loewcr the Jackets re-
turn five lineman including: juniors
Kenny Rubio Laron Slay Kurt
Dudck and Brian Clayton and se-
nior tight-end Jason Ingram. The
only problem spot for the Jackets
will be at the wide receiver posi-
tion where Coach Gibson will have
to replace both starters.
On the defensive side of the
ball there arc many holes that have
to be filled. One position that is set
solid is safety where Scdrick
Mcdlock returns for his senior sea-
son. Medlock had seven intercep-
tions last season 32 solo tackles and
was named to the American Foot
ball Coaches Association's Division
III All-Amcrican team.
The defensive front seven is
the major concern for HPU enter-
ing this season. The Jackets lost all
starting linebackers and defensive
tackles from the 1997 team. The
only returning starters in the front
seven arc defensive-ends Tommy
Ford and Damcion Miller. HPU is
hoping to plug these holes in a de-
fense that allowed just 1 14.3 yards
rushing per game last year.
"Our defense is a concern
with the loss of all of our lineback-
ers" said Gibson "But I think by
the end of the season wc should be
in a situation where we are com-
fortable with the players we have."
The Jackets will once again
fight it out with conference rivals
Hardin-Simmons and Austin Col-
lege for the conference crown.
The season begins on Sep-
tember 5 on the road at Midland
Lutheran with the first home game
coming the following Saturday
against Prairie View A&M.
Howard Payne begins confer-
ence play on October 3 at Missis-
sippi College.

us a c nance to stay in a match."
I cwallyn describes his team
as "ovcrachicvcrs" that could still
qualify for the conference tourna-
ment "The conference tournament
includes four teams" Lewallyn said.
"The top two teams in each divi
sion quality and then it is the next
two teams with the best record. So
three teams from our division could
make it to the tournament."
Returning starters for the
Uidy Jackets include junior Baylor
Brown and senior Tonya Laird.
Brown was named to the second
All-Conference squad at the middle
blocker position and laurel was an
honorable mention outside- hitter
last year.
Other players to have key
roles this season are seller Julie
Price and defensive specialist 'loni
Bernard. With several pla cms re-
turning from the junior eaisity. the
Lid Jackets should be young but
able to meet the challenges of a
new season.
According to Lewallyn the
biggest advantage that his team has
is its teamwork and the example
that Laird and Brown give.
"Tonya Laird has been on
the team for four years and Baylor
Brown has started the past two
years" said Lewallyn. "Their lead-
ership and play will be a good ex-
ample to the rest of the team."
