Howard Payne University's
Student Government has been busy
this semester working hard and
meeting goals for the student body.
The student government
wanted to set up five goals that they
knew they could achieve.
"We wanted the goals to be
ambitious yet possible." said Stu-
dent Body President Brian Carter.
The five goals included get-
ting a few ping-pong tables an-
other pool table and a change ma-
chine repainting the light poles re-
furbishing the volleyball courts and

Howard Payne University's
Department of Modern Languages
is offering an endorsement in En-
glish as a Second Language en-
dorsement. The program allows college
students or certified teachers the
opportunity to obtain an endorse-
ment in ESL by taking courses in
linguistics and language teaching
methodology. The three courses re-
quired for certification rotate each
semester and arc offered in the
evening.
"This schedule enables edu-
cation students to complete the
three-course sequence within a cal-
endar year and provides an oppor-
tunity for certified teachers in the
area to add the endorsement to their
certification" said Peter James
chairman of the Department of
Modern Languages.
According to James area
teachers will work with a mentor
at their school or with HPU fac-
ulty. For more information con-

Convention

Texas' Baptists arc continu-
ing to change paths as they head
into the future.
A new convention. Southern
Baptists of Texas formed and met
after the annual meeting of the
Baptist General Convention of
Texas on November 10. According
to the Bapist Standard 183
churches made the split from the
BGCT. According to sources the
new group formed to create a con-
vention that would be more loyal
to the Southern Baptist Conven-
tion. The Southern Baptists of
creatine a basketball court in the
parking lot of the on-campus apart-
ments.
"Last year former President

former Vice-President

standards they set" said Carter.

Texas have accused the BGCT of
distancing themselves from the
SBC.
There are many different
views of "biblical equality" that
Texas Baptists hold. The BGCT
adopted a new amendment that op-
poses an amendment approved by
the SBC last summer.
The BGCT amendment states
males and females arc "created in
the image of God" and goes on to
say that women and men arc to
"submit to one another as a witness
to the world of the transforming
power of servant leadership."
The SBC amendment con-
trasts this by saying husbands have
meets challenges of
chapel service the Homecoming
halftimc and the Homecoming deco-
rations. They also provided the Coke

Brian Carter Student Body President

sue the Student Government has
voiced the opinions of the students
concerning chapel to the administra-
tion. "It's not our job to change

path makes
the responsibility to "provide for. to
protect and to lead" and the wives
should "submit. ..graciously to the
servant leadership" by their hus-
bands. Many faculty and students
from Howard Payne were able to
attend the convention.
Dr. Allen associaatc professor
of Christian studies stated that "the
convention for the most part was
very positive." Allen noticed a ma-
jority of the meeting was made up
of senior adults. Most of the older
Baptists in Texas that make up the
BGCT arc conservative but not ul-
tra conservative or moderate but not
ultra moderate. Allen feels that the
administration what the students
arc saying. Student Government is
the channel of communication bc-
iwccn the students and the admin-
istration" said
Carter.

that the students who arc not in
Student Government would chal-
lenge the officers to make HPU a
better place and then support them
in government positions while in
office. Once the students arc

this and a focus on doctrinal or po-
litical persuasion that is radical
may be a reason for pulling out of
the BGCT.
Allen also stated "If a
church chooses to leave the
BGCT I hope thev will consider
the claims of the Southern Bap-
tists of Texas with their head and
heart. God is faithful in the ordi-
nary as well as the extra ordinary."
Dr. Roark professor of
Christian studies also reflected on
the convention meeting.
Roark was particularly im-
pressed with the chancellor of
Baylor Herbert Reynolds and his
semester
top goals for officers
elected tncysnouiu spend their en
crgy reinvesting in the life of the
university not in complaining.
"There arc times when we
need to raise issues but the main
thrust is to make things better not
be a watchdog over the professors
and administration" said Carter.
Next semester Student Gov-
ernment will continue to be just as
busy. The light poles will be painted
and each organization and individu-
als arc invited to paint a light pole.
There is also talk of having student
debates in Mims on various topics
students want to debate. Finally the
Winter Formal "Snowball" will be
held on February 6. More planning
will continue for the spring.

vision for the future. Reynolds' pur-
posed a lengthy outline recom-
mending that the BGCT become a
foundation for a new group which
he called the "Baptist Convention
of the Americas."
"I do not think the BGCr is
ready to move in that direction"
stated Roark. "I think Reynolds is
pointing at something I suspect will
happen in the future."
Although Texas Baptists may
continue to change and choose
separate paths we all serve a God
who has not changed and will not
change. As Texas Baptists the
changes will affect us and our ministry.
