OBIE ARELLANO
YJ STAFF WRITER
Miiny people could never
imagine a life without electricity.
telephones or cars. A life like this
would seem hard to live since
main of us have had those com-
modities most of our lives.
To Edna "Eli" Yoder this
was all part of her childhood.
Yoder was born in an Amish com-
munity in Friedericktown Ohio
v here she and her family spent the
first four years of her life under
strict Amish regulations. These
regulations strongly disapproved
of things like television and radio
and regulated many other things
like the clothing they had to wear.
On one occasion Yoder re-
calls how she used to be afraid to
take off a head robe she used to
wear because regulations pre-
vented her from doing so.
At the age of four Yoder's
famil decided to leave the Amish
community and move to Kentucky
Coolest Room Contest
i
J If you had a nickel for ev-
I ery time your parents told you to
clean your room would you still
have to take out a student loan?
Or do you know someone
I at Howard Payne University who
should be filthy rich?
. Maybe now your parents
would be proud of the way you
have transformed your room into
a work of art.
J Well here is the chance for
I you to show off that rumpled
masterpiece you call a room.
The Yellow Jacket wants
J to feature the coolest dorm room
I at Howard Payne University in
its next issue.
I We're looking for the best
of the best. If you or someone
where she spent most of her life.
Although Yoder likes Texas
she admits that she likes Kentucky
more.
"I love Kentucky. I like
Texas but I miss the outdoors of
my home and the running and play-
ing barefooted in the woods with
my brothers. Here in Texas you
can't even go outside barefooted
because of the fire ants and stick-
ers" said Yoder.
While attending Eastern
Kentucky University Yoder de-
cided to change colleges. She be-
gan searching on the Internet and
stumbled upon HPU. The rest is
history.
"I actually found Hardin
Simmons and HPU together and
had to choose between them but
now I know that God wanted me
here" said Yoder.
Yoder's inspiration in life
has been her parents Levi and
Miriam Yoder and her brothers.
She still visits her grandmother
who lives in an Amish community
in Ohio. In her spare time. Yoder en
joys hacking (hacky sacks not com-
puter hacking) reading singing and
playing the piano. She also enjoys
listening to Christian alternative mu-
sic and playing video games like
Zelda on the Nintendo 64.
Yoder's sense of fun in life can
be clearly seen in her motto "never
grow up."
Yoder believes the turning
point in her life was when she rededi-
catcd her life to Christ in eighth grade.
"That is when I became real about my
Christianity" said Yoder.
Yoder is currently a sophomore
and is majoring in Christian studies
with a specialty in youth ministry. She
strongly believes this is God's call-
ing in life for her. She is also involved
in journey groups and is Dr. Art
Allen's student secretary.
Yoder's change of environment
throughout her lifetime has done
nothing more than help her become a
person appreciative of life's good
qualities and as Eli says "nothing
is impossible with God.
