Harry M. Hyde of 5631 Sham-
rock, Houston, who killed an 11-
pointer on the second day of the
season, Nov. 14, 1976, in the
Bear Creek community, won
top honors in The Radio Post’s
9th annual ‘Big Antler’ contest.
The winner of main prizes in
the contest, only deer and ant-
ler contest conducted in Fred-
ericksburg and Gillespie Co.
each year for the past nine
years with the exception of a
“Bull of the Woods” deer con-
test, a membership affair at
Harper, was determined in
judging of the thirteen entries
submitted at Earl Schwett-
mann’s Taxidermy Studio, 305
West Main Street, Friday after-
noon.
Hyde’s buck was killed on the
Buckler ranch, about 12 miles
south of Fredericksburg, on
November 14. The antlers had a
spread of 17V2 inches with .the
judges determining the winning
antlers using the metric
measuring system totaling
333.5 points.
Judges were Earl Schwett-
mann, who did the actual
measuring, with John ‘Zeo’
Weinheimer writing down the
statistics and Frank Staudt,
former Harper postmaster and
a life-long ardent supporter of
deer hunting and conservation
measures, and Norman J. Die-
tel, editor-publisher of The
Radio Post, assisting in the
judging.
FREE MOUNT, TROPHY
AND CASH PRIZE
Hyde consequently won a
free mounting by the Schwett-
mann Taxidermy Studio, a
handsome trophy and $25.00
cash from The Radio Post for
. the first-place antlers.
Second place went to Danny
Matthews, son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. B. Matthews, of Dumas,
Texas, who killed a 16-pointer
on the Henry Lewis Welge
ranch in the Doss community
on November 21. The antlers
had a spread of 18 inches. Total
points for this entry was 326.0,
only 6V2 points separating the
two top-place antlers. Prize for
Matthews is a $35.00 merchan-
dise certificate given by John
Weinheimer’s Sport Center, 153
East Main Street, and a trophy
by Armke Awards, Roland
Armke, for the antlers on this
buck having the most points,
16.
Third place went to M. R.
Theeck, 12514 Park Forrest,
Cypress, Texas, an 11-point
buck killed on the first day of
the hunting season, Saturday
afternoon Nov. 13,1976, on Fred
Dietel’s ranch near Harper, off
the old Kramer Loop road. The
antlers had a spread of 16%
inches. Reportedly, this was
the largest and heaviest deer
killed on that ranch in many
years. Prize for this entry is a
$25.00 merchandise certificate
from Willie Behrends Tire &
Auto Service, S. Llano & E. San
Antonio streets.
Fourth Place went to Harold
F. Jung, Gillespie County’s tax
assessor-collector, who shot
this buck on the M. E. Bennett
ranch, 13 miles west of Fbg., an
8-pointer, on Nov. 16. Prize:
$10.00 cash by The Radio Post.
Fifth Place — Franklin
“Blue” Beckmann, for his 10-
pointer killed on Dec. 17 in the
White Oak community. Prize,

his place off the Tivydale road
on Nov. 23. Prize, $5.00 cash by
The Radio Post.

Jung, 8-pointer, killed on Nov.
16 on his ranch, Bear Mt., killed
same day as 4th place winner
mentioned above. (Only one

how many entries.)

Feller, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Feller, San Antonio,

test since its inception in 1968.
(Another prominent Harper
citizen, Floy Bode, who has
served as judge, also, each
year since 1968, was unable to
attend last Friday due to sick-
ness, having reportedly an
attack of winter’s well known
influenza.) Measuring the ant-
lers and using the metric sys-
tem was Earl Schwettmann
with John ‘Zeo’ Weinheimer of
the Sport Center and Norman
J. Dietel of The Radio Post
assisting. The judging com-
prised measuring the width of
the antlers, length of main *
beam, girth (circumference of
antlers at base, and between
points, points, and length of
each point. Each point counted
only if it was at least as long as
its base.)
It is still the wish of The
Radio Post and co-sponsors of
this annual ‘big antler’ contest
that the Fredericksburg Cham-
ber of Commerce, or some
civic organization here, spon-
sor an annual deer and / or tur-
key gobbler, hunting contest,
one for local residents, one for
out-of-county hunters who bring
a considerable amount of reve-
nue into this area each hunting
season. The contest should
include the weight of the deer,
or turkey. Some arrangement
might be made so that the deer
and / or turkey entries could be
weighed at some service sta-
tion, one perhaps that remains
open 24-hours per day and
night, so that hunters could
bring in their entries at any
time, after dark, late in the
evening, etc. (We would recom-
mend that a person be paid for
weighing the deer or turkey
and that fee need not be
exhorbitant or very great.)

JUDGING BIG ANTLER CON-
TEST at Schwettmann’s Taxi-
dermy Studio, 305 West Main,
Friday afternoon, was an inter-
esting event both for the judges
and for visitors. Left to right in
the picture are Richard ‘Dick’
Kanz, loan officer of the Com-
munity Savings & Loan who
had just brought in a set of ant-
lers for mounting; Earl Sch-
wettmann, proprietor of the
taxidermy studio who is using a
tape measure with the metric
system for exact measure-
ments; John ‘Zeo’ Weinheimer,
proprietor of the Sport Center,
co-sponsor of the annual big
antler contest since its incep-
tion in 1968, and Frank Staudt,
retired postmaster of Harper
who has served as judge also
since The Radio Post inaugu-
rated this contest nine years
ago.

on the Lower Crabapple Road,

Radio Post.
Last year there were 15 en-
tries, largest number ever en-
tered. However, considering
that there were fewer deer, and
especially fewer and by far
many more smaller bucks
killed in the county during the
past season, the sponsors of the
annual ‘big antler’ contest felt
happy and highly appreciative
of the great interest manifested
by the hunters and for the num-
ber of entries submitted. Up
until last year the contest en-
tries were usually somewhat
less, up to about 10 or 12 en-
tries.
