Easter Sonnets and Easter Bonnets
/ “I could write a sonnet—about your Easter bonnet, but son-
nets don’t have much to do with charge accounts and credit.
Bonnets do though—and so does Easter,” says J. I. Kelley,
manager of the Retail Merchants Association of Paducah.
Today Paducah customers are so accustomed to charging
the family’s Easter outfit that she automatically sets it up for
May or June budget, not to be paid for in the month that it
was first worn. This is a great boon to families that are get-
ting back on their feet from Christmas who doesn’t fall in
that group.
Not only Easter clothes, say Paducah merchants, but many
other things are being sold at this season. Spring house-clean-
ing means new curtains, rug replacements, and all sorts of
household goods. And then there are the families who strug-
gled through just one more winter with that old car. They’re
looking around for a new model.
Whether it is cars or clothes, Mr. Kelley says, Paducah
merchants are happy to oblige with credit conveniences for
all customers who are dependable. As one merchant points
out, a credit transaction can be better than a cash transact-
ion for both customer and seller. The customer gets merchan-
dise or service he might have had to wait for, and the seller
makes a sale he might have otherwise lost.
So don’t feel hesitant about applying for credit at our Pa-
ducah stores. They want to sell you. And don’t feel self-con-
scious if they ask you for a little information about yourself.
This is only a reasonable precaution that every merchant
must take in order to stay in business and accomodate credit
customers.
