State sets
curriculum changes
Many of the changes
proposed to the legislature
involving changing the
content of school
curriculums in Texas are
coming into effect faster
than most people think, ac-
cording to Harper School
Superintendent Harley
Etheridge.
Etheridge submitted the
following schedule of
changes which will affect
the Harper school over the
next two years. Most of the
changes involve more
training in science and
math for graduation from
high school.

Implementation of HB 246
in school districts will occur
according to the following
sequence.
1. During the 1984-1986
school year, all provisions of
the bill regarding time allo-
cations shall be implemented
fully at the elementary level.
2. All provisions regarding .
the essential elements shall
commence implementation
during the 1984-85 school
year and be fully implement-
ed beginning with the 1985-
1986 school year for grades
kindergarten-six.
3. All provisions of a well-
balanced curriculum at the
secondary level and gradua-
tion requirements will be
fully implemented in the
1985-1986 school year.
Students who enter the nin-
th grade in 1984-1985 must
meet the graduation require-
ments of HB 246.
4. All of the essential ele-
ments for grades seven
through twelve will be imple-
mented fully beginning with
the 1985-1986 school year.

Johnny James “Jay”
Treadwell, Jr. ,21, of Bangs,
formerly of Kerrville , died
last Friday night in Sid
Peterson Hospital after
being injured in a one car
accident just after 8 p.m.
that evening near Harper.
According to sources on
th e scene, Treadwell
swerved to avoid hitting a
deer on Ranch Road 783
5.7 miles south of Harper,
when he lost control of his
vehicle and ran into a tree.
DPS reports a passenger,
Mark Lee Martin,20 , of
Brownwood, was taken to
the hospital and listed in
intensive care.

Our sympathy is extended
to the family of Mrs. Wm.
(Maggie) Keen, 100 years
old. who passed away on
Tuesday at Fredericksburg.
The funeral was Thursday
afternoon at the Methodist
Church, with burial at Junc-
tion. Modelle Jobes Parker is
the only surviving child,
along with 5 grandchildren,
8 great-grandchildren and 2
great-great grandchildren.
Our sympathy also goes to
the family of another old-
time resident, Mrs. Wm.
(Jessie) Cosper, 88, who
passed away in the Kerrville
hospital on Thursday, after a
long illness. Rev. J. C. Tur-
ner conducted the funeral
service at 11 a.m. at Grimes
Funeral Chapel. Burial
followed at the Harper
Cemetery.
On Palm Sunday, Mr. and
Mrs. Cody Marschall honor-
ed their son, Scott, on his
confirmation at their home
in San Angelo. Among those
attending were Mr. and Mrs.
Victor Marschall, Mr. and
Mrs. Chester Itz, Malcolm
Marschall, Justin and
Mignonne, Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Fritz, Mona, Alicia,
Terry and Dennis Fritz from
here, and Mr. and Mrs. Herb
Waller and son of San An-
gelo.
On Palm Sunday, Morris
Bode from Florida surprised

E. B ode, by being at their
house when the Bodes re-
turned home from church.
Then the family all gathered
at the home of Marjorie and
Pooch Stevens. Morris stay-
ed until Thursday.
On the first Saturday in
April, 18 of the 22 Brownies
who sold Girl Scv ‘ cookies
earlier, enjoyed an outing to
Kerrville. They enjoyed
skating ane eating at Mr.
Gatti’s. In addition to lead-
ers, Kathy Behrens and
Royce Ann Baethge, they
were accompanied by Cathy
Harper and Cathy Armke
and Michael Basket. On their
meeting day, the Tuesday
before Easter, they helped
clean up around the
Lutheran Parish Hall where
they have been meeting.
On Wednesday before
Easter, the Lutheran Women
had their meeting at 9 a.m.
and spent the rest of the day
cleaning house at the Parish
Hall. Pastor Mielke led the
Bible Study. Plans are going
ahead for the women’s con-
ference to be held Friday, the
27th, even though the pastor
will already be at Elgin.
On Monday, Mrs. Minda
Mosel visited with her niece
and family, Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Moritz on Goat
Creek Road.
It’s good to see Willie
Roberts home from the
hospital.
Bruce and Karen Smith
had a three-day visit from
Karen’s parents, Larry and
Frances Sands trom. The
Sandstroms were in the pro-
cess of moving from New
York back to Oregon and
stopped to see all three of
their daughters, Lauren in
N.Y. City, Kirsten in Hous-
ton and Karen, on the way
west. They enjoyed an after-
noon in Harper on one of the
three days, visiting with a
number of Karen’s friends.
EMPLOYERS
DEADLINE
April 30 is the deadline for
employers who must report
on Social Security and with-
held federal income taxes for
the first quarter of 1984. If
the quarterly tax due (less
any deposit made during the
quarter) is $500 or more, the
unpaid tax must be deposit-
ed.
SENIORS TO HOLD
BARBECUE
The senior class will spon-
sor a dinner, Sunday, May 6,
at the school cafetorium.
Barbecued chicken, pre-
pared by Mr. Clayton Mas-
sey, will be served along with
potato salad and pinto beans.
For dessert there will be
delicious homemade peach
cobbler made by Mae
Wachals!
Serving will be from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. Plates are
$2.75 for children and $4.00
for adults.
