Harper section to get oil test, drilling contracts made on land two
miles from Harper: The announcement that drilling contracts have
been drawn for an oil test near Harper has been received with much
enthusiasm. The block on which the well will be drilled comprises
about 11,000 acres and circles south and west of Harper on what is
known as the Klein Branch ridge. The block is two miles from
Harper and is about four miles wide and ten miles long.
Harper School play wins great applause: One of the most
enjoyable events of the season was the presentation of two plays at
the Harper Theatre last Friday night by the Latin-Spanish Club of
Harper High School. From the time the curtain went up on the first
act, a large crowd sat alternately spellbound and convulsed by the
delightful comedy-drama enacted before their eyes. The play was
sponsored by Mrs. C.V. Lee teacher of Latin in Harper High School.
The first presentation was a one act comedy 'His Wife's First
Husband', in which four players performed greatly to the
amusement of the audience. Harvey Stevens Jr., as a hen-pecked
husband, Cynthia Lee as a cantankerous mother-in-law, Fern
Sellers as a scolding wife and Watkins Tarr as the idealized first
husband composed the cast.
'Fingerprints,' the feature play of the occasion, a delightful
comdey-drama, was excellently played. Belton Tatsch, as Hosey
Hawks the fingerprint detective was favored with the comedy lead of
the play, and carried it out in such characteristic realism that his
every action and remark brought forth laughter. Costume and facial
make-up carried out the portrayal of the character.
Gilbert Anderegg played the role of Ned Thorndyke, part owner of
a ranch’, and father of Pamina, a lass of sixteen years. His portrayal
of a fatherly ranchman was gracefully performed.
Gene Jones as Jimmy Lee, Ned's partner in the ranch, was a
typical cowboy of happy-go-lucky disposition. His costume, poise
and diction on the stage was wkillfully performed and showed great
talent.
Watkins Tarr sillfully portrayed the city dude who came out West
for the avowed purpose of seindling Thorndyke and Lee out of their
ranch, in order to develop its oil possibilites. He almost succeeded
in getting the ranch at a handsome price to its owners after much
dickering only to find it worthless as far as oil was concerned. He
displayed great talent throughout the play.
Cynthia Lee, as Pamina Thorndyke, a ranch girl of great charm,
but ignorant of her possession was particularly attractive in her role.
When she finally blossomed out into a beautiful young lady, dressed
in latest fashion, all the swains promptly lost their hearts, and
almost their heads. She showed diligent training.
Fern Sellers played the role of paulette Whitney,a city butterfly of
tempermental character. She showed great ability in her part.
Cecilia Kaiser, as the mother of Paulette and Roger, carried out
her part in a well-trained way. It was she who advanced Roger the
money with which to buy the ranch he was so anxious to speculate
with.
Lesa Belle Jones played the part of Miss Amelia Thorndyke, Ned's
sister who brought the city folks to the ranch and who insisted on
taking Pamina back to the city to educate and refine her.
Considerable experience gave her a distinct advantage in playing
the part.
Opal Mabry, as Mignon Mocare, a French maid in the service of
Paulette Whitney, played the part excellently both in accent and
costume. Hosey Hawks lost no time in winning the petite maid's
heart.
Flora Calentine, although playing a minor part, was excellent as
Porcelin Purdy, negress, and cook for Miss Amelia.
