ALL-STATE BAND
Jason Platznet and Paul
Lange, sons of Maureen
Platzner and Pat and
Terry Lange, respective-
ly, were priveleged to
be a part of the opening
ceremonies of the U.S.
Olympic Festival in San
Antonio this past Friday
night. The two received
invitations because of
their advancement to the
All-State Band, and said
they enjoyed themselves
thoroughly. It meant
some travel and expense
for rehearsals, and so
forth, but they won't
forget the friends and
excitement of the fes-
tival itself. Maureen
and Kim Platzner and
Peggy Ernst attended the
opening ceremonies and
took in the sights and
sounds of the new Alamo-
dome. It's something to
see!! Most impressive
was the smooth operation
of the Via buses, pick-
ing up and delivering
the thousands of people
in attendance. It's
true, folks!! City folk
sure don't have a lot of
patience!! They don't
make many adjustments in
life for circumstances
and expect a lot from
any and every one they
deal with. It's nice to
be around people with a
little tolerance and un-
derstanding and good hu-
mor ! !

Pointers For Parents
Poor Vision Can Cause School Problems
The earthworm is often
known by several other
names, including fish-
worm, angleworm or night
crawler.
(NAPS)—One in four school-age
children has a vision problem,
according to the National Society
to Prevent Blindness (NSPB).
Could your youngster be one of
them? In a nationwide survey of
teachers, 87 percent said they
have had students whose poor aca-
demic performance may have been
caused by an undetected vision
problem. The survey was adminis-
tered on behalf of the Sears
Optometric Advisory Council.
Experts say it’s important for
parents to look out for signs of
vision problems in their children.
Often, the child:
• Rubs his or her eyes excessively.
• Shuts or covers one eye.
• Tilts or thrusts head forward.
• Has difficulty with reading or
other close-up work.
• Blinks more than usual.
• Is unable to see distant things
clearly.
• Squints the eyelids together
or frowns.
A child may also complain of
itching, burning or a scratchy feel-
ing in the eye area; not seeing
well; dizziness, headaches or nau-
sea following close-up work; and
blurred or double vision. The eyes
may appear crossed, red-rimmed
or swollen, inflamed or watery
and there may be recurring infec-
tions of the eyelids.
To help children, as well as
adults, get the vision correction
they need, the NSPB and Sears
Optical are co-sponsors of National
Eye Exam Month in August, 1993,
to focus attention on the need for
good vision care. NSPB urges
everyone to follow a program of
vision care that includes regular
eye exams, perhaps every other
year or more frequently, depending

The deepest spot in all the oceans. Challenger Deep,
is 36,198 feet below the surface of the Pacific. If the
highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest, were put
into Challenger Deep, more than a mile of water would
cover the mountain.
National Eye Exam Month,
sponsored by NSPB and Sears
Optical, is a good time to focus
on your child’s need for good
vision care.
on the doctor’s advice, and more
often with advancing age.
For children, NSPB recom-
mends an eye examination shortly
after birth, by six months of age,
again between the ages of three
and five and periodically through-
out the school years.
During National Eye Exam
Month, many Independent Doctors
of Optometry associated with
Sears Optical donate $1 for every
patient they see to support NSPB’s
sight saving programs. Over the
past four years, they’ve donated
nearly $500,000.
Also during National Eye Exam
Month, Sears Optical will pay for
eye exams with up to a $40 reim-
bursement when patients purchase
a complete pair of eyeglasses.
Additionally, any patient taking
advantage of this offer through
Sept. 11, 1993, can receive this
same exam reimbursement on
future eyeglass purchases at Sears
Optical through the year 2000!

HESS?!
If you’re a very active per-
son, it might be a good idea
to learn the art of loafing.
Psychologists say that even a
few minutes a day of doing
nothing may help you tackle
your work with renewed en-
thusiasm. A refreshing cup of
hot tea may be just the right
accompaniment for this type
of break. By slowing down
just a bit, you’ll be surprised
how you’ll suddenly find the
time to more fully enjoy your
family relationships.
