THE HARPER HERALD -f
A TRIBUTE ----
To Rev. A. A. Gitter and
St. Anthony’s Congregation
This week marks the 75th anniversary of the
founding and establishment of St. Anthony’s
Catholic Church in Harper. The congregation
and church was organized in 1908 and the first
church, of frame, wooden structure with steeple
and bell tower, was built and completed in 1909.
In more recent years a newer, larger church, of
stone masonry, was completed to accommodate
the growing membership.
During most of those three-quarters of a cen-
tury there has been a pastor in charge who came
to Harper, for health reasons, from Wisconsin.
He is the Rev. Alois A. Gitter, known by his
parishoners as Father Gitter, an amicable,
friendly, courteous and kindly gentleman who
has endeared himself to this entire community
regardless of race, color or creed.
Father Gitter has served as pastor of St. An-
thony’s Church for the past 52 years, having
come here on Dec. 4, 1930. Except for vacations,
a time when he was ill, or those days when he
was called away due to a family member’s
demise, etc., Rev. Gitter has not missed a week,
filling the pulpit and leading his flock in prayer
and thanksgiving. He has faithfully fulfilled the
duties, the religious responsibilities imposed on
him by his church, whether it was regular ser-
vices, Mass, or weddings, or funerals, or
whatever. He has on numerous occasions been
called on to address the graduates of HHS, or to
speak much as a Fulteen Sheen to public audien-
ces who have always admired and respected him,
whether in or out of the pulpit.
During his tenure as head of St. Anthony’s,
Rev. Gitter has seen the completion and improve-
ment of a new church, the construction of a new
residence and the improvement of the entire
community.
Harper is indeed fortunate to have here in its
midst, a pastor such as Rev. Gitter and to have
benefitted from his wisdom, kindness, civic op-
portunities fulfilled, and congregation apprecia-
tion.
The editor-publisher of The Harper Herald,
N.J.D., is glad and proud to have known Father
Gitter most of these years, ever since assuming
proprietorship of the Herald in 1941. For most of
these yyears Rev. Gitter “contributed” the “I
READ THIS” column which most of our readers
enjoyed each week, many subscribing to the
Herald because oT’his contributions — all of
which was excellent material arm worm reaumg.
In modern history, there have been very few,
if any, to have achieved such a long period of ser-
vice, over 52 years, at only one and the same
place. Rev. Gitter has established this enviable
record.
We join the community in extending
CONGRATULATIONS and SINCERE BEST
WISHES to Rev. Gitter and to St. Anthony’s
Church congregation on their 75th anniversary.
