THE WAR WHOOP
Friday January 10. 19S8
Glimpse of
By CONRAD
Many are familiar with the very morbid and realistic
short story by Guy DeMaupassant entitled "The Moribund '
This briefly is the story An old and very poor couple find
that the woman's father is dying and seems to be drawing
closer to his death with every breath
The couple feel so sure that the old man will die soon
that they announce his funeral to be for the next day The
woman quickly starts baking the apples for the funeral guests
who are soon to arrive and the other necessary arrangements
are made Hut the following day when all the "mourners"
arrive for their baked apples they find the supposed dead
man still breathing the necessary life giving air
The couple become enraged at the old man's failure to
die and have to apologize for the funeral postponement and
must now feed the guests their apples "for nothing"
Familiar Story Teaches Lesson
What does this story have to do with world news9 Well
this is the point It seems that many many college students
icgaid the world situation much as the so-called "mourn-
eis" regarded the dying man He was merely an excuse for
getting .in apple to cat there was no further concern
Cxcept in a few rare cases the college student merely
regards the wmld in which he lives as an "excuse" for many
evident events and lie has no leal concern for the events
themselves 01 their possible interpretations
It is hoped that the point just made will not be taken as
.1 "plug" foi this paiticulai news column Instead it is in-
tended as an in gent plea that the students of this college
campus avail themselves of every opportunity to "keep up"
with the vital news made in our world every day Education
in the world news aiea is ceitainly quite handy to us college
students from the time we turn on the 8 U0 a m radio news
bioadcast until the time we fold oui evening papers before
bed .it night
Studants Need To Be Informed
This encouiagement of knowledge in world events is cei-
tainlj being given a piactical use also We see the senior
students of oui eauipus who aie piepaung foi then law school
medical school and giaduate school entrance examinations
toting news magaines nuclei their arms along with their
school books These giaduate schools are laying definite stress
upon backgiound in lustoij and cm lent eents It Is time now
that the undeigi.uluate student thought of these things
As the college student makes leady to confiont the new
eai befoie him it would be finite wise to have a conscientious
attitude towaid oui mtei national situation Many believe that
this jo.it of l')r)lt will mean the making or bieaking the sink-
ing oi swimming of oui nation It is the college student's
nation too Whj shouldn't he be concerned9 The world is in
a wlnil and it should be a definite challenge to the quick and
leady college student not to slip off of its spinning surface in

us that a paper's editorials and its
editorial policy arc what make it
distinctive that they give the
paper the good quality which dis-
tinguishes it from all others when
all have access to the same news
sources and give much the same
coverage
Particularly is this true in the
case of a weekly newspaper and
even more so in a college com-
munity where the exchange of
Ideas often takes on importance
approaching that of imparting
facts
So Mr. Hcchi you'll have to
excuse us for existing we think
people in newspapering have the
right to express their opinions
openly and with it the obligation
to keep opinions in the editorial

their news with them as vou used

Letter From the Editor
The semester comes to an end not with a climatic clash
of cymbals and roll of drums but with the dismal hours of
study and the sleepless drugged brain of the student It has
been a good semester a full semester and I have enjoyed
editing the McMurry War Whoop but I find for various rea-
sons that I am going to have to leave the reservation For
this reason in this the last edition of the current semester I
wish to thank the student body for their support and for their
intercut
It has been our policy to eieate as much intelligent con-
troversy as would benefit the campus and the students Per-
haps we have stepped on some toes If we have it was with
the interest of the campus at heart and with the understand-
ing that any question has two sides
The paper has been open to everyone in order that as
many diLerent opinions as possible might be brought to light
Many have availed themselves of this privilege and we feel
the campus has benefitted
(Thank you again for your interest your support and in
some instances for your tolerance
