this thing called "fever". Fever
it a situation in which the
normal temperature of the body
is elevated._Thia elevation has
no riacl degree of elevation.
This is because the nor/nal
temperature in any individual
may or may not conform to the

esceptrd as normal If one's
fever is normally 97.4 and it is
now 98 6 this would be an

is normally_99 2 and the fever
was 99.6 this would probably
not be an elevation An eleva-

esceptrd that this elevation is
both a response and probably
both a response and probably a
defense against an infection.
Whether the infeet ion bv viral,'
baetcnal. parasitic, or chemical..
the bodys' response is to elevate
the temperature The elevation
of temperature is not neces-
sarily harmful, but if*a prolong-
ed presence maybe.
There are other factors that'
must bi considered. Some indi- .
viduals have difficulty elevating
their temperature This includes
very thin individuals and elderly
individual* who may dot have
the body mass capable of
elevating the temperature. The
lack of temperature elevation
does not -preclude an infection.
The opposite is those indivi-
duals who have excess body
mass, fiave hormonal inbalances
that predispose temperature
elevation, or who wear lar^e
amounts of clothing on'a regular
basis. In these individuals the
simple presence of temperatuj
elevation is not necesi
indication of an inft
The first things that muW be
done in the case of fever is to
document the temperature ele-
vation. This cannot be done hv
simply feeling the individual.
Althogh feeling of fever may he
sensed, seldom can an acuratc
degree of temperature elevation
consistently be found by simply-
feeling the skin. A thermometer
is a necessity. Either oral skin or
rectal temperatures are recom-
mended. With the oral tempera-
tures recommended. With the
oral temperature being the basis
for the standard the skin (or
auxiliary) temperiure is usually
measured approximately 1 de
grot- lower than the oral tem-
perature and the rectal tempera
lure is usually measured ap-
proximately I degree higher
than the oral temperature After
a temperature elevation has
been documented then appro

The beginning treaiment
should be to allow the indivi
dual's body to radiate off the
heat This means to remove all
hut absolutely necessary cloth-
ing and to allow- at least 'pactial
free flow of air around the bobs
Without this it will he difficult to
impossible to lower the temp

any of several common medica
lions used to lower temperature
These include Aspirin or Acc

brand names) to lower the

the Jackets arc still very much
in ihe title picture. Manor was
all down in the mouth after
getting heal two weeks ago by
the Jackets So 'they were
trimmed this week by a good
Pfugervillc team. But watch for
the ole Mustangs from Manor
recover some of thYir injured
pride, and rise up to upset the
Mustangs from the lakes. ,
Should this happen, the Jackets
would NS'co-champs. but still
watch the bi-district contest
from tire stands. This game
would be very remarkable.
The offensive line of Keith
Fain. Jim Olmsted. Dale
Russell. Johnny Leach. tames
Vicrus. and injuretf Brian Miller
over the past five games have
really come to dominate the line,-
ol scrimmage. The seniors, all
except Miller; will not be
replaced easily. Russell is a
three year starter. He. with
Olmsted'and Fain, have pro-
vided the leadership and en-
thusiasm one can sec demon-

Leach, a starter for two years,
