Commerce members devoted a
great deal of their time to assure
that the Fun Fest would be run
as smoothly as possible. Specs
doesn’t permit mentioning all
their names, but we all know
who they are. and we extend to
them a sincere “well done ”1
Also we wish to thank all the
groups and individuals who had
booths or activities. A special
thank-you goes to Dr. Gene
Dayton who devoted all day to -
provide a ftee blood pressure
check station. Thanks also to
Jim and Joyce Hawthorne at
Western Auto who furnished
a color TV so we could watch the
‘Horns render the Hogs, and to
Kelly Coats of Llano TV Cable
for installing an antenna.

Calving seaaon is In full swing
in Llano County. Screw-worms
are very much a threat until the
first killing freeze and ranchers
are urged to check newborn
calves and other livestock for
possible cases. With the breed
ing season coming up toon, it
would be a good idea to check on
the availability and soundness
of bulls to be used. An unsound
or infertile bull can cost a
producer lost of money. A visit
to the veterinarian for a fertility
check especially on virgin or
newly purchased bull might be a
good investment. Breeding
aged bulls are expected to be in
short supply this year Produ
cers needing to buy bulls should
begin shopping around soon
Bulls which have been fed
heavily may need time to
condition themselves for the
breeding seaaon This might
especially be true of some of the
bulls offered in consigtnent
sales

Reproductive disease* of cat
tie can be costly. Two of the
more common of these are
Leptospirosis and Vibriosis
Both can cause abortion but
Vibriosis is the harder of the two
to detect. Many time* the fetus
is resorbed at an eariy age and
cows continue to come in heat
Both of these diseases can be
controlled with a good vaccina
tion program Producers are
urged to check with their
veterinarian for details.
Nutrient requirements vary
greatly for dry and lariating
cows In planning vour feeding
program for the winter months
have a much higher require
ment for protein and TON
Feeding dry cows at this same
level is a waste of money
Producers also need to know the
nutrients contained in feedstuff*
fed This is eapecially true of
hay. Llano County hay can vary
from 2 to 18 percent protein If
you plan to feed hay this winter,
why not let ua tend off a sample
for you for analysis._
