Wide Wide World
Once there was a man who lived in a very
rich part of town. This would have been fine ex-
cept he was very poor. Late at night and all day
long he plotted ways to acquire some of his neigh-
bor's wealth. Then one day he gave up his plot-
ting at least for the moment and decided to use
his neighbors' method hard work. Soon after he
began working the poor man started becoming
richer in many ways. His family grew (albeit
sometime illegitimately) and his bills increased.
Some said he was Still looking for ways to ac-
quire his neighbors' wealth. Others were not too
sure. Now this man had a son who for many years
had been bullied by the other 'kids on the block.
This was very strange when one saw that he was
easily the largest in size. Perhaps he just wasn't
using his mental powers f ully. At any rate he was
rather lazy and easily pushed around. Finally his
father took the boy aside and gave him a very en
couraging talk pointing out to him that he was
dasily the largest boy on the bb(ik and should be
able to take care of himself even do a little bully-
ing on his own. At this the son brightened and
went out of the house to set to his tasks. It wasn't
long however before the boy came home with a
bruised nose and a black eye. The next clay he ven-
tured forth again and this time was more success-
ful. "He managed to thoroughly thrash the small-
est boy in town. The days went by and so did the
successful battles. The townspeople began to grow
cautious about the new town bully however and
prevailed upon the boy's father to speak to him.
At first the father merely laughed and went his
way. Then the boy began fighting his own bro-
thers and sisters. This did make the father angry.
Again the father called His son aside and said to
him "Son you must stop this fighting for you are
causing strife among your own family and giving
the family a bad name in the town." The son mut
tered some reply about old-fashioned parents but
nodded his head and for a few days stopped fight-
ing. Once again however ;the 'boy 'began Hispid

This time however the boy by 'now f ull-grown
turned on his father and boat "him unmercifully.
He then made tHis announcement to the towns-
people "What 1 did to my father is merely a sam-
ple. You will live the way I 'Wish. 'I am dumb so
you will be dumb. I am pagan so you will be pagan.
I must be fed so you will feed me." Of course the
townspeople wanted to fight but it was too late.
Who would go against such strength. 'Finally the
town withered and degenerated until those living
there were dust and lizards and scorpions and
snails.

The name of the islands was
preserved in the records of
the elder Pliny of Vesuvius
fame who In describing a Ro-
man explorer to the Islands
about 40 BC. called them
"Canada so called from the
multitude of dogs of great
size." And In the final analy-
sis If you know what a can-
ine Is you can dig this dog-
canary bit.
We turn from poultry to
hamburgers. In your earlier
years dldh't you wonder why
you couldn't taste any ham In
a hamburger? Then didn't you
gradually assume someone
had made a mistake of some
sort and go ahead and wolf
down that mixture of gristle
and wheatles? You were right.
No ham. The style of sand-
wich called hamburger orig-
inated in Hamburg Germany.
And in the final analysis you
already knew that didn't you?
Not changing the subject
we turn to horses. Most ev-
eryone khows a canter is a
sort of slow gallop. Well sir-
rah' back In Merrye Olde Eng-
Jande everybody made an. an-
nual trip to the shrine of Bis-
hop Thomas a Becket as you
know if you've been at Mcty a
couple of years. The people at
the north end ow'the British
Isles had a fur piece to travel.
So to got to Canterbury
tmickly without wearing"0111
their mounts ithe pilgrims
urged their horses to a slow
gallop known-as. the Ranter-
bury trot. And in .the final
analysis the term was short
ened to "canter."
It IS poet-ry. How about
that?
Jimmy True tells us balloon
means "a big ball." Thanks
Jim.
SUB Is Open
On Saturdays
Radford is now open on
Saturday afternoons and Sat-
urday nights. This attraction
has been added recently by
the administration. It was
done after the students of all
four classes said that they
would use the facilities if it
wore opened.
Besides the facilities of the
refreshment bar there are
bowling facilities ping-pong
facilities and TV.
If the dorm gets too noisy
for you it is also a good place
to study.
Radford cannot be left open
if the students do not use It.
Last Saturday night one stu-
dent used the snack bar fa-
cilities. It is up to the students now.
Only we can make our campus
a good campus. Let's stay on
campus on weekends ana sup
port campus activities. This is
your home for four years.
