Slants
By TUCKER SUTHERLAND
Spring is near and that means
fhat “Gone Fishing” signs are
being hung on doors all across
the nation. Most people with ev-
en an ounce of sporting blood in
their veins can not resist the
challenge, excitement and fun of
fishing.
It has always been an accept-
ed fact that fishermen are big
talkers and it has often been
insinuated that when describing
their catch fishermen let their
imaginations get the best of
them. I would never call a man
a liar.
Because of this, however, I
have adopted a law that I ex-
pect some day will win world
wide acceptance. It is called,
“Sutherland’s Law On Fish
Tales”. The formula is this:
consider what the fishermen ac-
tually said he caught, divide this
by two, consider this answer an
exaggeration of the fact, and
that should just about give you
an idea of what he actually
caught. Therefore, if a man says
he caught ten big bass, divide
this by two to get five and con-
sider the five he caught were
very small fish.
'If as many fish were caught
each year as fishermen claim
they catch our lakes and
streams would soon be left to
the snakes and frogs..
Everyone knows that fisher-
men are big talkers but when
asked one certain question they
shut tfaeir mouths tighter than a
clam. Just ask, “Where did you
catch these fish?” They will
either quickly change. the sub-
ject or give you an answer like,
“Oh, out at the lake.” Nothing
is so dear to a fishermen as his
favorite spot — whether he
catches anything there or not.
This makes me think of the
two fishermen that were fish-
ing from a boat in a large Tex-
as Lake. The two fishermen,
Bill and John, were having an
unusually good run of luck in
a certain-spot in the middle of
the lake one day. Bill said, “you
know John, this is such a good
spot we should mark it some
way so we can come back again
some day.” Just about that time
a fish hit Bill’s line and he for-
got about what he had said.
Late that night as the two men
pulled their boat load of fish in-
to the bank Bill remembered
his statement, “Say, John, did
you remember to mark that
fishing spot?”
“Certainly, I did,” said John,
“I marked an ‘X’ on the side of
the boat right where we were
catching them.”
“You idiot,” screamed Bill,
“what if we sell this boat!”
Fishermen. An interesting
breed of animal. Rain, sleet,
snow, ice — nothing can keep
him from his favorite past time.
His wife may push him around
night and day but when it is
time to go fishing not even she
can stop him. And I am glad to
be counted among this irrespon-
sible group of daring liars.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lee of Robs-
town have moved to the park
where they will manage the con-
cession stand and boat docks.
