The time will soon be here that
we will perhaps advertise for a
billy goat to eat up all the spring
poetry that may come floating
and smiling into this office.
General Passenger Agent E.
P. Turner of the Texas A Pacific
railroad is confident the present
session of the legislature will en-
aot a law that will exterminate
the tioket scalper.
Last Wednesday, near An-
nona, Texas, Miss Jennie Stew-
art, a 13 year old girl was burn-
ing stalks in the field and her
clothing caught fire. She was
burned to death. .
‘ The seven months old daugh-
ter of Frank Culpepper, at Book-
ville, Texas, was left in the
housip alone last Wednesday
morning. It got into the fire
some how and was burned to
death. ...

The little son of Claude Kelly,
near Springtown, was left in tne
house by his mother while she
was milking the oows and the
father had gone to work. The
ohild was 18 months old. Some
how his oluthing caught fire and
he was burned to death last
Monday morning. Such things
happen too often. Why will peo-
ple not be more particular with
the little ones?
Some newpapers are' nothing
if not cold-blooded. One of them
gets onto the poor little steel
trust and accuses Carnegie of
wanting the Philippine islands
for a back yard—a place where
he oan go and sit down—and
smoke—and see the water oure.
Morgan lit his oigar with a mill-
ion dollar bond and claims to be
aoting in his business affairs
from purely patriotic motives—
he is trying to prevent Rockefel-
ler from annexing the United
States to the Baptist church.
C. E. Phillips, writing for
Farm and Ranoh on the subject
of oanning factories, after giving
a history of several attempts to
start on a large scale, says that
he and a neighbor put the full
amount of fifty dollars into a
oanning faotory and about three
hundred dollars into oans. They
did a nioe business. The next
year he went to another looality
and was persuaded to put up a
plant at a oost of $6,000. There
was not enough stuff raised to
keep the plant running one day
in the week; hence it was not
run at all.and is standing there
yet, that much dead capital.

The Baird 8tar gives an ac-
count of a protracted meeting
which is in progress in that town
at the Methodist ohurch con-
ducted by Rev J A Biggs. The
old fashioned hymns are used,
whioh makes the servioes quite
a novelty to the young people.
The attendance of the ohurch
members is not satisfactory to
Brother Biggs, -some of them
saying that they are there in
spirit if not in person. He ob-
jects and says he is not running
a spirit meeting.
On our trip in the south part
of the county we found strings
of wagons in the small towns
hauling oorn out to the farms
and the merchants are unable to
supply the demand. We found,
however that the farmers are
going to plant some kaffir oorn
and a great deal of sorghum this
year. They are beginning to
conolude that it is bad polioy to
spend two ootton orops to make
good a oorn crop. Kaffir oorn
will remove this trouble. ~This
writer has measured one hundred
bushels of it to the aore on very
poor land in this oountv and it is
the best of feed.
